Full of beautiful hotels and lush beaches, Pointe aux Piments extends from the village of Balaclava and the bay of Baie aux Tortues, a national marine park, in the south to Trou aux Biches in the north. A beautiful coral reef lies just offshore, and marvellous mountains lie behind. If you do not like this beach, you probably do not like beaches in general. Pointe aux Piments event venues are a little more upscale than those of Flic en Flac, but the difference is marginal.
Named for the first prime minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) has no direct flights from North America but has several direct ones from Europe: The airport, which is approximately 40 miles southeast of Pointe aux Piments, is talking about building a second runway.
There are no convention venues in Pointe aux Piments, but this is a relatively small island, so resort guests are no more than 13 miles north of the Swami Vivekananda International Conference Center in Port Louis, which has a 35,000-square-foot convention hall and a 20,000-square-foot lobby for all events, among other spaces.
The resort venues in Pointe aux Piments, however, will not disappoint, although interior meeting space tends being on the small side begs the question: why be stuck indoors in Mauritius? Top of the list are the 265-room Le Meridien Ile Maurice, which has six meeting rooms, the largest ballroom on Mauritius and 25,000 square feet of gardens for events; and the 73-room The Oberoi, Mauritius, which has two meeting rooms and gorgeous outdoor function space. Other both of which are technically in Balaclava. Other good choices include the 254-room Le Victoria, which has three meeting rooms, the largest for 180 persons and an executive suite; the 215-room Maritim Hotel Mauritius, which has the Maritim Hall for 350 persons, four meeting rooms and, most unique, the immediately adjacent Ruins of Balaclava, a crumbled fort with outdoor space for 1,200 persons, and the 190-room Casuarina Resort & Spa, which has no meeting space but lots of outdoor areas for events.
Right at the northern tip of Pointe aux Piments is Mount Choisy, a promontory where Blue Safari Submarines can take groups approximately 100 feet below the waves to investigate marine life, while an adventure on the other side of those waves is with Mauritius Catamaran, which takes groups of up to 20 to 40 persons, depending on the vessels' sizes, to Tamarind Bay, Bay of the Dolphins and several islands. Dry-land options include the Mauritius Gymkhana Club in Vacoas, a private club with an 18-hole golf course, a restaurant and a conference room; The Sugar Adventure, or more correctly, L'Aventure du Sucre, which has lots of history, an old sugar mill amid beautiful countryside, a meeting room for up to 100 persons and Le Fangourin restaurant, and a visit to the Rhumerie de Chamarel rum distillery, a very attractive site that offers tastings, tours, the possibility of setting up private events and the 80-seat l'Alchimiste restaurant.
Restaurants in Pointe aux Piments, or in Grand Bay just to its north, include the Hidden Reef Restaurant & Cocktail Bar, a fine-dining restaurant specializing in seafood and with an umbrella'd courtyard; Le Navigator, which is a manor house separate from the Le Canonier Resort with 100-person meeting rooms; Le Pescatore, which as its names suggests also does well in seafood and has a private dining room, and mostly open-air Sea Lovers Restaurant facing the sea and with a very laid-back vibe. One restaurant that is farther away, on the other coast, but well worth the effort to reach is Rasoi by Vineet at the 163-room, stunning One&Only Le Saint Geran, the cuisine overseen by Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia.
