Pretoria, South Africa Meeting Planning Overview

Approximately 40 miles north of Johannesburg, Pretoria is the capital of South Africa but within the nation is often called Tshwane. Go there at the right time of year, and the city will be purple due to the thousands of jacaranda trees planted in nearly every one of its numerous green spaces. While the city is known for government and, increasingly, business, it does have tourism attractions, including several prominent museums that double as Pretoria event venues.

Its principal airport is OR Tambo International Airport, which is just outside of Johannesburg and thus also is approximately 40 miles to the south of Pretoria. Flights there come from all over the world, including from Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC-Dulles.

Chief among convention venues in Pretoria is the CSIR International Convention Center, in the suburb of Brummeria. CSIR has an auditorium for up to 450 persons and an exhibit hall for up to 1,000.

Restaurants in Pretoria that are perfect for groups include Hemingway's Restaurant & Bar and Chapters, both of which are part of the 73-room Leriba Hotel & Conference Centre in Centurion that is able host up to 800 persons; Hillside Tavern, perhaps the city's best steak house; Geet Indian Restaurant, quite a delicious Indian spot in the suburb of Brooklyn; and Kream, which also is in Brooklyn and can look after groups of up to 20 persons in a private room and serves fine dining amid suave interiors.
