For those groups intrigued by the theory that an alien spacecraft landed in Roswell, New Mexico, more than 50 years ago, the International UFO Museum and Research Center should not be missed. For those who don't believe in UFOs, the area boasts hiking, biking, a wildlife refuge, two excellent golf courses and a zoo. Either way, Roswell event venues seek to impress.
Roswell is in southeast New Mexico, and the Roswell International Air Center (RIAC) is five miles south of the central business district. Roswell is also serviced by Southwestern Railroad. Roswell sits at an ideal connection between I-40 at Amarillo, I-10 at Las Cruces/El Paso, and I-25 to Denver/Canada and South to El Paso/Mexico. This crossroads offers southern connection to Phoenix, San Antonio and the country of Mexico, as well as easy transit to cities including Dallas, Oklahoma City and Denver.
Roswell event venues include the 13,000-square-foot Roswell Convention Center, which also has three breakout rooms that are 446 square feet, 572 square feet and 837 square feet. About an hour away from Roswell is the Ruidoso Convention Center that offers 24,000 square feet of space. Other Roswell event venues include the Archive Building that is part of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico. This building can hold 150 theater-style and 83 for a banquet. Also part of the Historical Society, the stately home of Mr. and Mrs. James Phelps White, a Roswell landmark since its completion in 1912, is available for a gathering of 25. The Roswell Museum and Art Center is another Roswell meeting venue that offers an auditorium for up to 100 banquet-style and up to 200 theater-style. The museum features an excellent, diverse collection.
There is no shortage of places to stay in Roswell. The Best Western Sally Port Inn & Suites features a popular steakhouse, the Cattle Baron. There is also a La Quinta, Best Western, and Fairfield Inn.
New Mexican cuisine is influenced by Native American, Mexican, Spanish and other European cultures. One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile.
The mystery of the 1947 Roswell incident is featured at the Roswell UFO Festival held annually Fourth of July weekend. Events include an alien costume competition, an evening parade along Main Street, a street dance and concerts.
