Often referred to as Africa's richest square mile, Sandton is where Johannesburg's money goes. Technically part of Johannesburg, this suburb is the most important financial and business center in the country and on the continent. Home to Africa's largest stock exchange – the Johannesburg Stock Exchange — and South Africa's largest shopping center, Sandton plays an important role in the country's economy. Meeting space in Sandton can be found in some of the best hotels in South Africa and unique meeting venues such as Liliesleaf.
O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), located just outside the city of Johannesburg, serves the suburb of Sandton. Africa's busiest airport offers non-stop flights to worldwide destinations including Atlanta, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Some of the best meeting rooms in Sandton can be found at Sandton Convention Center. It has more than 200,000 square feet of meeting, exhibition, and special event space in its 12-story building, catering to up to 10,000 guests.
Hotel venues in Sandton include the 326-room Sandton Sun, which is connected to the Sandton Convention Center and offers 3,610 square feet of meeting space of its own across 10 function rooms; the 231-room InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers, which has one small meeting room and is linked directly to the Sandton Convention Center; the new, 220-room Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, which offers nine meeting rooms, the largest spanning 7,416 square feet; the 303-room Radisson Blue Hotel Sandton, Johannesburg, which features 18,000 square feet of meeting space across 16 meeting rooms; and the luxurious, 194-suite Michelangelo Towers, which has two meeting rooms.
Event planners in search of unique meeting venues in Sandton should consider the historic Liliesleaf Farm in the adjacent suburb of Rivonia, where a raid by South African police in 1963 led to the arrest of Nelson Mandela. Today, the farm is a cultural and historic center that has four meeting spaces, including a 70-seat auditorium.
Other unique meeting venues in Sandton include the Maropeng Visitor Center, which offers conference facilities for 40 to 500 guests, and the equally genteel Bryanston Country Club, whose eight meeting rooms can host both private and business events.
