Renowned in the West for being the birthplace of Japan's most famous beer and its 4th largest city, Sapporo is located at the top of Japan on the northern island of Hokkaido. Also well known for hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics (from which several Sapporo event venues derive), it gets its fair share of cold weather.
Sapporo's international airport, New Chitose Airport (CTS), is connected by a 37-minute train ride from the city center. It receives service from the key hubs all over Asia such as Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Bangkok, and Kuara Lumpur, as well as all over Japan itself.
Chief among convention venues, Sapporo Convention Center has 200,000 square feet of space including a 2,500-seat multifunctional hall and eighteen meeting rooms.
Hotel venues in Sapporo include the 292-room Royton Sapporo, which has 22 meeting rooms, the largest with room to host 2,014 guests; the 504-room Sapporo Grand Hotel, which has 23 meeting rooms including a ballroom for up to 1,000 guests; the 511-room Hotel Emisia Sapporo, which has twelve meeting rooms and convenient direct access to the airport; and the 285-room Mercure Sapporo, which has three meeting rooms, the largest of which can accommodate 130 guests.
One special event venue that should not be missed is the Sapporo Bier Garten, or Beer Garden, where all of the brewery's products – many not available in the West – can be tried. Other choices include the Okurayama Jump Stadium/Sapporo Winter Sports Museum, which gives a glimpse of when Olympic games were quieter affairs; or Glass Pyramid at Moerenuma Park, which is a perfect venue for gala dinners or receptions, not to mention its Michelin starred French restaurant.
All average costs based on U.S. Government Per Diem rates as published by the U.S. General Services Administration.
