Merlion Park

Park
10 minutes away
Originally located at the Merlion Park by the Esplanade Bridge, the Merlion and the Cub became a popular tourist attraction for visitors. The installation ceremony took place on 15 September 1972, officiated by the then Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Today, the Merlion has found a new home just 120 metres away from its original location, adjacent to one Fullerton. Measuring 8.6 metres high and weighing 70 tonnes, the Merlion statue was built from cement fondue by the late Singapore craftsman, Mr Lim Nang Seng. Mr Lim also built a second and smaller Merlion statue, measuring two metres high and weighing three tones. The body was made of cement fondue, the skin from porcelain plates and eyes from small red teacups. Designed by Mr Fraser Brunner, a curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, the lion head represents the lion spotted by Prince Sang Nila Utama when he re-discovered Singapura in 11 AD, as recorded in the "Malay Annals". The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the ancient city of Temasek (meaning “sea” in Javanese) by which Singapore was known before the Prince named it “Singapura” (meaning “lion” (singa) “city” (pura) in Sanskrit), and represents Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village.

Art Science Museum

Museum
10 minutes away
ArtScience Museum is an iconic cultural landmark in Singapore. Our mission is to explore where art, science, culture and technology come together. It is here at the intersection of art and science that innovation and new ideas are formed. Designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the lotus-inspired ArtScience Museum has been called “The Welcoming Hand of Singapore” by Mr Sheldon Adelson, the chairman of Las Vegas Corp. The building’s form is made up of 10 ‘fingers’ anchored by a unique round base in the middle. The design of each finger reveals different gallery spaces and the skylights at the ‘fingertips’ dramatically illuminate the curved interior walls. The Museum’s roof channels rainwater through the central atrium of the building creating a 35m water drop into a small, reflecting pool. The collected rainwater is recycled for use in the building.

Singapore Flyer

Recreation
5 minutes away
Daily flights: 8.30am – 10.00pm The first flight is at 8.30am and the last is at 10.00pm. Each flight is one rotation (≈ 30 minutes). As the world’s largest observation wheel, standing at the height of 165 meters, it offers one of the best views of the cityscape. There are plenty of other things you can do at the Singapore flyer buildings as well.

Marina Barrage

Park
10 minutes away
Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore’s 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. With a catchment area of 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island’s largest and most urbanised catchment. Together with two other new reservoirs, the Marina Reservoir will boost Singapore’s water catchment from half to two-thirds of the country’s land area. The mouth of the Marina Channel is to create a freshwater reservoir.
