Sofia Zoo

The Sofia zoo is the oldest and the biggest on the Balkan peninsula and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded in the beginning of 1888. It was initially settled in the park of the former royal palace, due to the fact that Tsar Ferdinand I had been quite interested in collecting wild animals, especially birds. The zoo keeps many different and exotic representatives of the fauna, among which – elephants, bears, lions, jaguars, cheetahs, deer, lamas, wild goats, ostrich, bearded eagles, pigeons, turtles and many others.

St. Nikolas Russian Church

It is in the style of Russian churches during the 17th century. It is under UNESCO protection. In the church there is a box that you can put your letters full of devotions. It is believed that Saint Nikola is going to help you one way or another.

Vitosha

Vitosha is a  mountain massif, on the outskirts of Sofia. It is one of the tourists symbols of Sofia and the closest site for hiking, alpinism  and skiing. The mountain emerged as a result of volcanic activity and has been subsequently shaped by the slow folding of the granite rock layers and a series of gradual uplifts of the area. Vitosha is very beautiful during all the seasons.

The Rotunda of St. George

Dating back to the 4th century, the Church of St George is the oldest preserved building in the city. The interior of the church is decorated with medieval frescoes. These depict Christ Pantokrator accompanied by angels as well as portraits of prophets. The frescoes were briefly painted over when the church was converted to a mosque during the Ottoman period. The grounds around the church contain excavations dating back to Roman times.

“Ivan Vazov“ National Theater

The oldest and the best theater in Bulgaria. The National Theatre “Ivan Vazov” was built in 1906-1907, featuring on top Greek mythological figures. The triangular white and gold frieze above the front stairs shows Apollo and the Muses, and twin towers on either side of the building depict the Goddess Nike in a chariot.
