Bordering the University of Miami campus and the cities of Coral Gables and Pinecrest, South Miami, about three miles south of downtown Miami, is home to residential neighborhoods dotted with mature trees and stucco homes, historic buildings and several parks.
One of the oldest municipalities in Dade County, South Miami is situated 6 miles from the Miami International Airport, 27 miles from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and 9 miles from the Miami Beach Convention Center. The city of South Miami has a stop on the Miami Metrorail system, which affords easy access to popular stops like Coconut Grove, Vizcaya, the downtown financial district and Hialeah. Fares are $2 per ride.
Miami meeting hotels in South Miami are limited to small chain properties, highlighted by the 122-room Hotel Indigo Miami-Dadeland, 124-room Courtyard by Marriott Miami-Dadeland and the 131-room Hampton Inn Miami Dadeland. In bordering Coral Gables, the 275-room Biltmore Hotel with 76,000 square feet of luxurious Miami meeting space and 250-room Hyatt Regency Coral Gables with 13,700 square feet of meeting space offer larger group options as does the 302-room Miccosukee Resort & Convention Center on Southwest 177th Avenue, which has 11,000 square feet of meeting space, a business center and spa.
There is a wide variety of special event venues in South Miami. For groups that want to stay close to home base, two possibilities include the MartiniBar at Sunset Shops, which can accommodate groups up to 600 with three large bars, a stage, dance floors, VIP rooms and fully equipped kitchen; and the AMC Sunset Place 24, a movie theater complex available for special events.
After meetings have concluded for the day, group-oriented entertainment venues in South Miami include Don Carter's Kendall Lanes, a mammoth facility with 72 bowling lanes and 24 billiard tables; Deering Estate, a wonderland of rare plants, tropical hammocks and endangered land forests; and the Venetian Pool, a spring-fed pool surrounded by Venetian-style architecture.
For shopping, dining and entertainment, groups gravitate to The Shops at Sunset Place, an outdoor shopping mall with Florida's only Niketown location, a Splitsville Luxury Lanes and a GameWorks.
