Tamworth, Australia Meeting Planning Overview

The small city of Tamworth might be as American a city in Australia as you can find, in terms of its preoccupations—horses, motorcycles, and Country & Western music. First, as the Country Music Capital of Australia, Tamworth boasts a 40-foot-high "golden guitar" and hosts the second-largest festival of such music in the world. (Expect Tamworth MICE event venues to be lively as a result.) Geographically, it lies on the western side of the Great Dividing Range and is 250 miles north of Sydney and 350 miles southwest of Brisbane.

Six miles northwest of downtown, Tamworth Airport (TMW) has scheduled service to Brisbane and Sydney.

Chief among convention venues, Tamworth Regional Entertainment & Conference Centre has several small meeting rooms and a 4,800-seat theater that can be configured for smaller events of 1,080 persons. MICE hotels in Tamworth include the 81-room Quality Hotel Powerhouse Tamworth, which has an herb garden for events as well as five function rooms, including the Guy Kable Room for up to 250 persons; the 60-room Best Western Sanctuary Inn, which has two city siblings in the 33-room Best Western Plus All Settlers Motor Inn, with meeting space for up to 60 persons and function space for 130, and 29-room Best Western Tamworth Motor Inn, on the same street, Goonoo Goonoo Road, and with a small conference center; and the 25-room Sundance Park, which includes the Cattleman Steakhouse & Function Center (and a guitar-shaped swimming pool, the bottom of which is decorated in tiling depicting the Australian flag).

MICE events can be held at the Australian Equine & Livestock Events Centre, which includes a 3,360-seat arena and a concourse for exhibitions, among other spaces; Powerhouse Motorcycle Museum, which has a collection of 50 motorcycles from the 1950s to 1980s; Capitol Theatre Tamworth, which seats 402 persons has a green room, and is next door to a cinema; Pavillion Function Centre, which is in the suburb of Nemingha and has room for banquets of 160 persons and receptions of 230; and the Frog and Toad Function Centre, which has space for up to 200 persons and is part of the 60-room Hallmark Inn Tamworth.

Good restaurant choices in Tamworth include a French restaurant, Le Pruneau. Dragon Palace, a Chinese restaurant with Australian touches, also has space for up to 200 persons. More traditional choices include surf & turf Safari Club Bar & Grill, which has won awards and also has a non-Australian element, this time from South Africa, and Cascada Cafe Tamworth, which has a 42-seat courtyard, a 100-seat restaurant, and a private dining room.
