Terre Rouge, Mauritius Meeting Planning Overview

Meaning "Red Earth" in French, Terre Rouge is that rare Mauritian town built away from the sea, although its immediate catchment area could be stretched from Tombeau Bay, or Baie de Tombeau, in the north to the beginnings of Mauritian capital Port Louis in the south. Terre Rouge event venues caters to indigenous industry as well as international tourism.

Named for the first prime minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) has no direct flights from North America but has several direct ones from Europe: The airport, which is approximately 35 miles southeast of Terre Rouge, is talking about building a second runway.

There are no convention venues in Terre Rouge, but this is a relatively small island, so it is no more than five miles northwest of the Swami Vivekananda International Conference Center in Port Louis, which has a 35,000-square-foot convention hall and a 20,000-square-foot lobby for all events, among other spaces.

Among the hotel venues in Terre Rouge is the Port Chambly Hotel et Village. The property is colored orange and yellow and is parts Moroccan souk, Venetian canals and Mauritian splendor, with 42 hotel guest rooms and approximately 100 villas, as well as two restaurants and a meeting room for 50 persons. Elsewhere, the 215-room Maritim Mauritius has 6,000 square feet of meeting space. Groups can also head to either Balaclava or Trou aux Biches. In the former are the 271-room La Plantation Resort Mauritian, which has five meeting rooms, the largest able to host 800 persons, and the 220-room InterContinental Mauritius, which has five meeting rooms for up to 600 persons; while in the latter are the beautifully landscaped, 333-room Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa, which has a conference room for 150 persons, and the 190-room Casuarina Resort & Spa, which has no meeting space but lots of outdoor areas for events.

As with other Mauritian destinations, there are one or two gathering spots for events outside of the hotels, with the remaining choices being farther afield but not difficult to reach. In the Terre Rouge area are the Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary, an important breeding and stopover spot for many birds, common and rare, and with a visitor center, viewing platform and meeting room. Elsewhere, head to the Rhumerie de Chamarel rum distillery, a very attractive site that offers tastings, tours, the possibility of setting up private events and the 80-seat l'Alchimiste restaurant; the gorgeously situated and gorgeous Eureka Creole House built in 1830 has a restaurant, a terrace and a neat, large lawn; and Casela Nature & Leisure Park, which has numerous animals and birds in a safari-like setting with a restaurant, a zip-line, team building activities such as Segway tours and opportunities to host seminars, banquets and themed evenings. One place, the Talents Center, is a training and meetings venue in the village of Pierrefonds, has six meeting rooms but also full catering services for events.

Restaurants in Terre Rouge suitable for gatherings are in the Port Chambly resort, those being the Mona Lisa, which has Italian fare and 70 seats inside or on a terrace, and Le Nid d’Pie, tucked beneath its campanile tower and also with seating for 70. Other choices require a little.
