Townsville, Australia Meeting Planning Overview

The Pacific Ocean city of Townsville sits opposite the central section of the 1,600-mile Great Barrier Reef and is the administrative centre for the northern half of the state of Queensland (in effect, its de facto capital). Located around Ross River and Ross Creek, it has a subtropical climate and is also opposite Magnetic Island, half of which is a national park. This pretty city has its fair share of beaches and MICE venues.

Townsville Airport (TSV) is the city's transportation hub. Two miles west of Townsville's central business district, it has service to Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney, and a host of smaller Australian cities.

Chief among Townsville’s MICE venues, Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre is right on the oceanfront with a view of Magnetic Island and has a maximum capacity for 4,128 persons, five meeting rooms, a lobby for up to 1,000, and a large outdoor area.

MICE hotels in Townsville include the 200-room Holiday Inn Townsville, which has six meeting rooms for up to 180 persons; the 194-room Jupiters Townsville Hotel & Casino, which has 10 meeting spaces, including a ballroom and a large garden tent; the 144-room Mercure Townsville, which has two meeting rooms and a ballroom for up to 300 persons; the 100-room Rydges Southbank Townsville, which has five meeting rooms and a ballroom for up to 500 persons; and the 93-room Chifley Plaza Townsville, which has space for up to 200 persons.

MICE venues in Townsville include the Museum of Tropical Queensland, which has two meeting rooms and banquet space in its Great Gallery for up to 300 persons; Cultural Centre Townsville, which has a collection of Queensland and Torres Strait Aboriginal art, banquet space for 150 persons, and reception space for 200, as well as a deck with wonderful harbor and ocean views; Picnic Bay Surf Lifesaving Supporters Club, which celebrates the legendary Australian occupation of ocean lifesaving and has a conference room for 50 persons and banquet room with deck for up to 200; The Brewery Townsville, which has two restaurants, its own beer, and a banquet center for up to 250 persons; and Townsville Golf Club, which has a gorgeous setting alongside the Ross River and has 18 holes of golf and three function areas, the largest able to host 110 persons.

Restaurants in Townsville large enough to host most groups include JAM Corner, which has a beautifully eclectic Australian menu, riverfront views, and two private dining rooms; Table 51, which also is beside the river, has room for groups of up to 120 persons, and is every bit JAM's equal; A Touch of Salt, again by the Ross River, and having a modern, outside deck area; Pier Restaurant, which has a modern menu of meats and seafood and an exciting spot overlooking the marina; and Michels, which has won awards and possibly is Townsville's best restaurant.
