Trou aux Biches, Mauritius Meeting Planning Overview

Trou aux Biches, a destination that sits between Balaclava to the south and Grand Bay to the north, has one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius – and it's a public one! Trou aux Biches event venues capitalize on this beauty – white sand, blue seas and either wispy clouds or no clouds at all.

Named for the first prime minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) has no direct flights from North America but has several direct ones from Europe: The airport, which is approximately 45 miles southeast of Trou aux Biches, is talking about building a second runway.

There are no convention venues in Trou aux Biches, but this is a relatively small island, so resort guests are no more than 13 miles north of the Swami Vivekananda International Conference Center in Port Louis, which has a 35,000-square-foot convention hall and a 20,000-square-foot lobby for all events, among other spaces.

Of the two hotel venues in Trou aux Biches, the beautifully landscaped, 333-room Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa has a conference room for 150 persons, while the far more laid-back La Residence de Trou aux Biches has 22 rooms but no dedicated meeting space. For other nearby choices with the ability to work, go to the 265-room Le Meridien Ile Maurice, which has six meeting rooms, the largest ballroom on Mauritius and 25,000 square feet of gardens for events; the 237-room La Mauricia, which has two meeting rooms for up to 125 persons; and the 73-room Oberoi, Mauritius, which has two meeting rooms and gorgeous outdoor function space.

With such a stunning beach right there, head to the sea for group activities that include Scuba-Doo, which provides training and use of self-propelled, mini-submarines that go to a depth of approximately 40 feet, and scuba-diving outfits, Prodive and Dive Dream, which also organize boat trips, snorkeling and other water activities. Two dry-land options in the area include the Mauritius Gymkhana Club in Vacoas, a private club with an 18-hole golf course, a restaurant and a conference room. Nelson Mandela Center for African Culture, which opened in 2011 in a building reminiscent of the mud mosques and buildings of Mali and Niger, has lecture halls and rooms for events and banquets.

There are a number of independent restaurants in Trou aux Biches, something that goes against the usual grain in Mauritius, two great options being L'Assiette du Nord, which specializes in seafood and curries; La Cavache d'Or, which has a fantastic spot at the beach, and – considered by many to be one of the best restaurants in all the island – Pescatore, which as its name suggests also caters to those loving fish dishes. Two other good choices include La Caravelle, where some dishes are prepared right in front of you, and Blue Ginger, a Thai offering, both of which are at the Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa.
