Local Attractions

Three Crosses

Historical landmark
10 minutes away
Three white crosses soaring over the hilltop in the Mountain Park is one of the most famous religious monuments in the country.

Vilnius Gedimina's Castle

Historical landmark
5 minutes away
Vilnius Upper Castle Museum was founded in 1960 in the best preserved and restored western tower of the Higher Castle. It is considered to be one of the symbols of Vilnius. The tower is named after the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas. This 14th century brick tower houses a small exhibition displaying archaeological findings and the history of the Castle. This tower is situated on the hill of 48 meter high. After walking up the Castle Hill you still have to climb about 80 steps up the Gedimino Tower before admiring the breathtaking view of Vilnius.

Television tower

25 minutes away
The highest building in Vilnius is the television tower. It has a total height of 326.5 metres, and at 165 metres the tower’s restaurant is the highest observation point in the city. The circular floor of the restaurant does a complete revolution once per hour, giving people sitting at the tables by the windows an excellent bird’s eye view of the whole city.

Genocide Victims’ Museum

15 minutes away
The Museum of Genocide Victims was set up on 14 October 1992 on an order from the Minister of Culture and Education of the Republic of Lithuania and the President of the Union of Political Prisoners and Deportees. It was established in the building where plans for deportations and the arrests of peaceful inhabitants, the persecution of opponents and the suppression of the resistance were devised and carried out by Soviet institutions between 1940 and 1991. For the whole Lithuanian nation, this building is a symbol of the 50-year-long Soviet occupation. Set up in the former KGB headquarters, the museum is the only one of its kind in the former Soviet republics. The museum was reorganised in 1997. By a resolution of the government of the Republic of Lithuania, dated 24 March 1997, the responsibility for running the museum was taken over by the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania. The museum’s objective is to collect, keep and present historic documents about forms of physical and spiritual genocide against the Lithuanian people, and the ways and the extent of the resistance against the Soviet regime.

Uzupis

5 minutes away
Užupis, the artists’ district of Vilnius. This is the home of the self-declared ‘independent’ Republic of Užupis. It has its own insignia (you will see it as you drive into Užupis from the Old Town over the bridge on the Vilnelė River), its official seal and a guardian angel in the form of a sculpture. It also has a Constitution, a copy of which is displayed at the beginning of Paupio (Riverside) Street.

Town Hall

Historical landmark
5 minutes away
The Town Hall Square is the traditional centre of trade and events in Vilnius. As far back as the early fifteenth century, the square was bordered by small shops. With the expansion of the city and the development of trade the number of small shops was increasing.

Geographical centre of Europe

Park
30 minutes away
Jean-George Affholder, a scientist at the Institut Géographique National (French National Geographic Institute) determined that the Geographic Centre of Europe is located at 54°54′N 25°19′E. This point is located in Lithuania, specifically 26 kilometres (16 miles) north of its capital city, Vilnius, near the village of Purnuškės. A monument, composed by the sculptor Gediminas Jokūbonis and consisting of a column of white granite surmounted by a crown of stars, was erected at the location in 2004.

The Gates of Down

Historical landmark
5 minutes away
Gates of Down is a defensive City wall of Vilnius, but now, when the city has expanded, the chapel and the gates are in the center. Nearby there is a Catholic church of St. Teresa and an Orthodox monastery of The Holy Spirit. The interior was refurbished in the neo-Classical style in 1829. This is a pilgrimage site for Eastern Catholics.
