Wan Chai, Hong Kong Meeting Planning Overview

On Hong Kong Island, historic Wan Chai is one of Hong Kong's premier nightlife districts. This makes for fascinating venues; for example, Wan Chai MICE venues include the spot that hosted the Hong Kong Handover. Markets abound here, so in addition to being Hong Kong's party district, Wan Chai is famous for shopping. At Spring Garden Lane, export garments are a bargain.

Subway, trams, ferries, and buses all connect to Wan Chai. The most used is the MTR on the Island Line. A great way to see the neighborhood is the tram, which gives meeting-goers an idea of everyday street life.

Chief among MICE venues in Wan Chai is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC), which is built on the stunning Victoria Harbor. HKCEC presently provides 66,000 square meters of purpose-built exhibition space, 200,000 square meters of multi-functional venues, and 5,500 square meters of event-support space. The HKCEC complex lies adjacent to 5 Star hotels, fringed on the harborside by a waterfront promenade.

MICE Hotels in Wan Chai include the Grand Hyatt, which is a five-minute walk to the HKCEC. The Grand Hyatt offers 25 flexible function rooms, including the Grand Ballroom, which can accommodate up to 950 people theater-style. Nearby, the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong has over 1,300 square meters of function space, including two versatile function rooms and eight boardrooms that are good for smaller meetings; and the Metropark Hotel Wan Chai offers an Executive Studio concept for 15 rooms that feature an all-in-one meeting and accommodation option.

City tour options are plentiful. A walking tour in Wan Chai can take a few hours, with the streets winding around markets and a mix of decades-old low-rises and newer skyscrapers.

Happy Valley is the home of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Happy Valley Racecourse. During the September-to-July season, races are held here most Wednesday nights. A night out at the Happy Valley track is a quintessential Hong Kong experience. There is also the Hong Kong Racing Museum inside the racecourse.

The Star Ferry, which group members can board at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC) for a Harbor Cruise, connects Wan Chai to many places. In addition, Wan Chai's Star Ferry pier has the Harbor Tour, a tourist cruise, making an indirect, circular route to all the stops of Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, and Wan Chai.
