 2019 Sara Ballard Volunteerism Scholarship Application

About Sara Ballard Volunteerism Scholarship

This scholarship fund is intended to assist one volunteer and/or young professional (preferably with less than three years of experience) in the field of volunteer management from Michigan and Washington each year to attend the National Conference on Volunteering and Service (NCVS). The scholarship will cover one of the following expenses related to the conference.

  • The cost of a flight to NCVS
    • Conference this year is in St. Paul, Minnesota from June 18-20, 2019
  • The cost of registration for NCVS
  • The cost of lodging for NCVS

Scholarship recipients can choose one of the above expense categories to be reimbursed for.  Scholarship recipients must submit a 250-word summary of what was learned at the conference within four weeks of returning home.

About Sara: Sara grew up in Michigan and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics from Alma College in Alma. She joined the Volunteer Center as executive director in March of 2008. Before moving to Olympia, she was the senior manager at the Volunteer Center at United Way of Snohomish County in Everett, Washington and served as the associate director of the Volunteer Centers of Michigan in Lansing. Sara was 36 years old when she passed away in Olympia, WA in March of 2011 due to complications after suffering a pulmonary embolism.  This Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Sara for young individuals to be educated to continue the work she so deeply believed in, that of volunteerism.

Qualifications: Current volunteer or professional working in Michigan or Washington State who has been in the nonprofit/volunteer management field for no more than three years.

Deadline for Submissions: Friday, February 15, 2019. The selected recipient(s) will be notified no later than Friday, April 19, 2019.

Fund Information: The Sara A. Ballard Volunteerism Fund is housed at the Capital Region Community Foundation and supported by donations of friends and family of Sara.
