Taking Pride at Work

Nancy Wu, Head of Client Service

Our paychecks make sure we show up for work every day.  But once we get to our desk and chug our coffee, it’s our pride in workmanship that pushes us to produce high quality work, instead of just getting by with the bare minimum.  Whether it’s getting the books closed faster, mentoring staff, or figuring out a better way to do things, as professionals we’re wired to seek learning opportunities to continually improve our work.

But this attitude doesn’t always come through in our own workplace.  Why is it that, as motivated professionals at the top of our game, we sometimes confront inefficiencies but don't do anything about it?

We Try to Live Up To “Leanness.  To some, being “lean” literally means that there is no time to do anything else beyond business as usual.  That is a misconception.  Lean implies minimal waste.  Devoting resources to tinker with process improvement takes time, but is not wasteful.  Wasteful is spending hours every month collecting paper, updating checklists, or compiling binders of documentation – when these activities can all be eliminated.  If non-business-as-usual exploration is regarded as a luxury, then there will certainly be no opportunity to ever achieve a different and more desirable outcome.

We
Forget to Recognize Each Other at Work.  People thrive when they are praised.  My almost-trained toddler beams when I acknowledge a job well done after he hops off the potty. As adults, we’ve long mastered bodily functions.  But when it comes to work, it’s the same way.  Appreciation from colleagues fuels us to do more and encourages us to keep reaching.  And likewise, criticism and lack of recognition dampen our drive.  This is proven, even for top performers.

We Don't Think to Leverage Tools
.
It used to be that technology is expensive to acquire and complicated to maintain.  So there was heavy reliance on the IT department to provide us with the tools needed.  Today, the opposite is true.  Software is targeted, user friendly and starts to work right out of the box, often without the need for any IT assistance.  But instead of seriously exploring the marketplace, we still succumb to old habits – cobbling workarounds in spreadsheets while waiting for IT to give us new tools.

We Think You Should Get Out More

At SkyStem, we believe that account reconciliations shouldn’t get in the way of life.  We help you get them done fast, get them done right, so you can get out of the office and on with your life!

See how we can help automate and streamline your month-end account reconciliations.
