Greetings from the Parents Program at Seaver College

                                                              July 2014

Happy July! We hope your summer has been care-free, sun-filled and blessed with the presence of friends and family. As we celebrate the Fourth of July and remember our nation's founding and history, we pray that God continues to bless our country and keep us one nation under Him. We trust that you and your family are enjoying these warm summer days and that this upcoming holiday is a time to rest and celebrate with loved ones.

Summer Session III begins July 1, and pretty soon the Fall Semester will be in full swing!
The countdown to New Student Orientation (NSO) has begun - only 50 days left until we are greeting our 1st year students! If your travel plans bring you to campus this summer, please be sure to stop by our office for a visit. We would love to meet you in person!

Lastly, please prayerfully consider becoming a Seaver Parent Associate. We need parent donors now more than ever! Seaver Parent Associates are a vital group of devoted friends whose loyal support is critical to the student experience. Your membership gift will support students, faculty, and help fund the Dean's strategic initiatives. Once you become a member, you will receive invitations to special Associate events, reserved seats at graduation, and other opportunities. Click here for more information.

Important News From Admissions

In general, unless your child gives you access to her/his academic and/or financial records, Pepperdine will not be able to share any related information with you. Academic records include registration, schedule, and grades. The student account is a detailed record of all costs of attendance, miscellaneous charges and related financial assistance. Students and others to whom they grant access, will be able to view, pay, and update student account information online, through WaveNet’s Student Center.

Some of the features of our student account/records system include no paper billing, online payments - especially that first one, and direct deposit.
Please ask your child to grant you guest access to her/his account! This is the only way that you will be able to access your child's information including account balance, payments, refunds, financial assistance, and/or grades. Your child may designate you as a guest user and will determine your level of access. We encourage you to speak directly to your child about this service.

For more information please contact the Office of Student Information and Services (also known as "One Stop") at 310-506-7999.

PARENTS...Please note that your student has been sent an email from the Student Activities Office regarding unaffiliated social media groups.  Please be sure to read the below and communicate with your son or daughter about the importance of correct information:

"Hello new students:

Obtaining accurate information over the summer months about your transition to Seaver College is very important. We have provided great resources to help answer your questions. However, due to the nature of social media, it is very easy for those unaffiliated with the University to set up communication channels and groups merely for marketing purposes and share inaccurate information.

Below are two official channels that the University has created to assist you as you make your transition.

1.  A very important site is the new student page that contains the checklist of action items that need to be taken care of before you arrive on campus. Contact information is listed on the right column of the checklist:  http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/newstudents/

2. The official New Student Orientation Facebook page is:  https://www.facebook.com/PepperdineNSO. On this page you can interact with current Seaver upper class students who are going to be your Orientation Leaders when you arrive on campus. These are students who have been successful in academics, and also have had a wide variety of experiences such as Greek life, Student Government, traveling overseas, holding an on campus job, being involved with volunteer service, etc. We will also publish official information about New Student Orientation on this page.

Please be aware that the “Pepperdine University Class of 2018” group found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/437281839722967/ and any events on the page are NOT managed or supported by Pepperdine in any way. Also, there may be other channels and groups that we are not currently aware of.  If you have questions about Pepperdine or your transition, please contact us on the official channels we’ve included in this email.

We are looking forward to your arrival on campus this summer!

Weisman Museum of Art Welcomes "Bob Peak; Master of the Movie Poster"

bob-peak-main

Robert “Bob” Peak (1927–1992) was an American illustrator best known for creating the modern movie poster. His versatile style used incisive draftsmanship, bold colors, and rich textures to produce dynamic, eye-catching compositions.

This exhibition features original art covering the full range of his career—from the famous posters he designed for movies such as "My Fair Lady," "Camelot," and "Apocalypse Now" to his work for a variety of national clients, including Time magazine, TV Guide, and Sports Illustrated.

Open Tuesday-Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM, and one hour prior to most performances through intermission. Closed on major holidays. Please call 310-506-4851 for more information.

Student Health Insurance Plan Offers Platinum Level Benefits

As the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) continues to be implemented
throughout the insurance industry nationwide, the Student Health Center and their expert
consultants are constantly monitoring legislative developments and federal mandates. The Pepperdine student health plan (SHIP), provided by Anthem Blue Cross, has developed into a robust insurance plan. In comparison to state exchange plans, it offers platinum level benefits at a very competitive cost.

For the 2014-15 plan year, SHIP will continue to offer comprehensive benefits that meet or surpass minimum requirements required under PPACA, including 100% coverage for preventative services, coverage for all Essential Health Benefits (as defined by Health and Human Services), no lifetime plan maximum, and no annual plan year maximum, among other benefits. Copays are waived for Health Center office visits, and practitioner fees are reimbursed at 100%. The Student Insurance Committee continues to evaluate and modify the plan where appropriate to keep the cost down while maintaining mandated benefit requirements.

We encourage you to compare the Pepperdine student health insurance plan to the coverage offered for your dependent on your employer plan - in some cases, the Pepperdine student insurance plan may offer equal or greater coverage, with lower out-of-pocket deductibles and copays, at a lower price. You may contact Wells Fargo Insurance Services, at 1-800-853-5899, or the Student Health Center at 310-506-4316, option 3, if you have additional questions regarding the Pepperdine student insurance plan.

Please Note:  The deadline to submit the health insurance electronic waiver for the 2014-15 school year is August 11, 2014.
