British-Swiss Facts
Did you know?
Election time
Decision making is at the heart of many discussions this May, with citizens in both the UK and Switzerland being asked to express their opinions on important matters for the future. On 18 May, Swiss citizens will take part in a national vote to decide whether or not to introduce a minimum wage. Ten days later, EU voters will elect a new Parliament. The BSCC will keep a close watch on the outcome and possible implications of both votes and report back to you. Closer to home, the BSCC will be holding its 94th Annual General Meeting in Geneva on 18 June, which means it will be election time for our esteemed councillors. I hope you will take part in this important BSCC event and also join us at the AGM lunch.
Magalie Chelius, BSCC Managing Director

Question of the Month April 2014 - Results
The April ‘Question of the Month’ asked whether the EU’s recent agreement on a single resolution mechanism engenders greater confidence that further financial crisis will be avoided or more easily solved. Most of the respondents [1] took the view that the agreement is progress, but only partly deals with the risks. The outcome will, however, depend on local interpretation of the rules and the comparability of financial data on which the authorities base their judgements, so that until the changes are put to the test, we cannot really be confident that they will prove to be adequate.

Business Conference on competitiveness of Geneva – Sponsors announced
The Geneva Region still leads on many counts. But what does it need to do to remain competitive? This question is at the focus of this year’s BSCC Geneva afternoon business conference on 2nd June 2014. We are delighted to announce that the conference will be co-sponsored by Coutts & Co., Credit Suisse, Knight Frank and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The support of these four, leading international companies, all with offices in Geneva, shows how important this public debate is not only for the region, but also for the international business community.

DID YOU KNOW that winter tourism in Switzerland was pioneered by the British at the end of the 19th century?
Tourism is the third biggest export industry in Switzerland, employing around 10% of the Swiss workforce. Initially tourism was a summer pursuit. In winter, heavy snow prevented most travel, and it was only the beginning of winter sport activities, largely pioneered by the British at the end of the 19th century, that brought winter holidays into fashion. British travellers still contribute largely to the Swiss tourism, being the country with the second most overnight stays in Switzerland. Tourism has also become more and more important for Britain. The industry is growing and has done exceptionally well last year: 2013 has been the best inbound tourism year in history. Switzerland is Britain’s 11th most important market for visits and 10th for the amount spent by visitors.
