Summer is ending and your characters are getting ready to head back to school. While you are busy constructing all the drama that is going to take place in the halls, do not forget what is happening outside -- just because summer is over, the need for sun protection is not.

Many people forget the importance of sun safety on the playground, during physical education class, and when kids are just playing outside. It only takes ONE sunburn in childhood to increase one's risk of being diagnosed with skin cancer later in life. By utilizing your characters as models for safe sun habits during the school year, audiences will be more likely to imitate these behaviors in real life and start the conversation about sun safety with their kids at home.

Remember these tips as you send your characters back to school:

Consider having one of your characters implement a school-wide sun safety campaign encouraging people to wear sun screen.
During scenes focusing on locker room gossip, think about showing your characters applying sun-screen as they are getting ready for Phys Ed.
Don’t forget those teachers and coaches, make sure they are wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses while outside supervising.

In early summer of 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Resolution No. 169 recognizing the importance of sun safety. Sponsored by Representatives Mike Bilirakis, Rick Boucher, Gene Green, Mary Bono Mack and Maurice Hinchey, the Resolution congratulates EIC's Center for Skin Cancer Prevention in bringing the issue of skin cancer prevention to the entertainment industry, and “encourages all Americans to protect themselves and their children from the dangers of excessive sun exposure.”
