ASIS NCC Member Achieves Quarter Century Status

Congratulations to ASIS National Capital Chapter Rober Shuster.  In May, Robert achieved Quarter Century Club status with ASIS International.

New Auditing Management Systems Standard

ASIS has released a standard that provides guidance for establishing and managing an audit program, as well as conducting individual audits consistent with the ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021 standards.

The latest in the five part series of ASIS resilience standards that offer a holistic, business friendly approach to risk and resilience management, the Auditing Management Systems: Risk, Resilience, Security, and Continuity—Guidance for Application American National Standard (SPC 2) will help practitioners evaluate risk and resilience-based management systems, establish and manage an audit program, conduct individual audits, and identify competence criteria for auditors who conduct conformity assessments of management risk and reliance-based management systems. View the Executive Summary.

Chairperson Corner

June 11th was the ASIS National Capital Chapter's Security Technology Seminar.  Our theme this year was “Security Through Knowledge, Experience & Ability” and featured learning sessions and vendor exhibit periods.

AlathariOur opening speaker was Lina Alathari, Ph.D., Research Psychologist for the National Threat Assessment Center.  Dr. Alathari is a research psychologist with the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) where she conducts research on protective intelligence, threat assessment, and cases of targeted violence such as attacks on public interests, assassination, school violence, and terrorism. In addition, Dr. Alathari is the project manager of an effort that established a database of behaviors, motivations, and triggers that have been identified as indicators of a person’s risk of engaging in targeted violence in the contexts of workplace violence, stalking, terrorism, and targeting of public officials. Dr. Alathari provided insight into identifying threats and taking proactive steps to avoid an incident.

ShevesDr. Alathari was followed by Andrew Sheves, Associate Director with Regester Larkin, an international crisis and risk management consultancy. The presentation began with a discussion of the differences between emergencies and crises then looked at how emergencies can develop into crises. Andrew further discussed structures, tools and techniques that can help link emergency response and crisis management into a single, unified and coordinated response system to help security and risk managers enhance their organizational resilience.

CraigheadOur keynote speaker was Mr. Geoff Craighead, CPP, BSCP, Vice President, Universal Protection Service and Chairman of the Board for ASIS International.  Geoff discussed the importance of ASIS membership to security professionals.  His discussion then turned to the management of the security and life safety operations of commercial high-rise facilities.

RuckSergeant Brian Ruck of the Fairfax County Police Department, was our afternoon speaker.  Sgt. Ruck discussed Situational Awareness in Critical Incidents.  His presentation began with a brief video entitled "Run, Hide, Fight" from DHS.  Sgt. Ruck explained that it is important for employees of businesses and government agencies to know what the police and rescue personnel expect of them in the event of a workplace violence event. His discussion included what employees and civilians should attempt and not attempt to do prior to, during, and after emergency personnel arrive.

The day was wrapped up with a networking reception hosted by the ASIS NCC Women in Security and Young Professionals.

We would like to thank our sponsor, Tyco Integrated Systems, as well as our exhibitors.

Member Spotlight:  Shannon Jurrens

Shannon JurrensShannon Jurrens is the Chief, Joint Staff Integrated Vulnerability Assessment Team of the US Air Force/Defense Threat Reduction Agency.  Shannon entered the Air Force in 1989, after graduating from the US Air Force Academy, and subsequently entered the Security Police career field.  From his first assignment leading 45 Airmen protecting 50 nuclear missiles spread over 4,500 square miles, to, much later, commanding a 600-person Group operating at 12 locations in four Middle Eastern countries, Shannon’s operational assignments have required ever-increasing levels of responsibility, which covered a broad range of security-related disciplines.  In staff assignments he has crafted law enforcement and security policy for a 100,000-person major command, provided the President his assessment of all nuclear weapon security in the US government, and directed the protection programs for the 53-nation US Africa Command area of responsibility.

For the last two-and-a-half years, Shannon has led a team of eight experienced experts in terrorism, physical security, structural engineering, cyber/information operations, emergency management, and infrastructure engineering who conduct vulnerability assessments of Department of Defense installations and other sites worldwide.

With regards to the existing security challenges faced in his current position, Shannon expressed that since his team’s work place is global, the most common challenges encountered include misaligned authority and responsibility for protection functions, ineffective training and exercises, and inadequate planning.

We made inquiry on how Shannon was introduced into the security field and he advised that initially, an interest in both the law and infantry-type training made Security Police an obvious career choice.  Since then, Shannon has grown to enjoy the challenge of reasoning through potential problems, in order to prevent them from happening or, at least, minimize their impact.  The best part, of course, is working with trained professionals who will run towards a problem when needed.  He believes that security management is a great career if you love working with people and enjoy the challenge of an ever-changing environment in terms of threats, locations, solutions and technology.

Shannon has been a member of ASIS for 16 years and recently joined the ASIS NCC within the last two months.  He also advised that his ASIS membership has assisted him in learning about the world of security management through shared ideas between members, attendance at ASIS conferences and current information from Security Management magazine.

The ASIS NCC presents several events during the course of a year.  However, Shannon believes that the NCC CPP-prep course is a great way to focus your efforts toward attaining certification.

Shannon has been an asset to the security industry and we thank him for his contributions.
