Depicting Homelessness Among Veterans

 Depiction Suggestions
- When developing characters who experience mental health challenges related to their service and experience homelessness, consider including plots that show how and where these characters seek help. This will demonstrate that Veterans can take steps to find support when they need it to avoid becoming homeless.
- Think about depicting positive encounters within families and in the community, where encouragement leads characters to discover that help is available.
- If your storyline focuses on Veterans or features a character who is homeless and a Veteran, consider including information about VA’s National Call Center for Homeless Veterans (877-4AID-VET) at the end of the show to promote awareness of the services Veterans have earned.

Veterans of the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq experienced higher incidences of homelessness after military service than their counterparts from other wars.

There are leaders and organizations across the country putting their time and effort into preventing and ending homelessness among Veterans. Consider incorporating the contributions of these leaders and organizations into your storylines. Their work with the Veteran community offers dramatic stories of loss and redemption—and audiences will learn about the services available for Veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The services provided by these leaders from an array of organizations work for thousands of Veterans in communities across the country, and it will take all of them, and all of us, to make a difference. This week’s Profile On highlights the work of a public safety organization leading the effort: the Atlanta Police Department. Their work is a model for the rest of the country, because it shows how public safety organizations can tap into their special strengths to help Veterans transition back into civilian life.

Resource for Veterans
The VA provides comprehensive and individualized care to Veterans who are homeless or
at imminent risk of becoming homeless, no matter when or how they
served. Trained, supportive professionals, many of them Veterans
themselves, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to connect
Veterans with the services they need to get them back on their feet. Make the call to help a Veteran access immediate help from the VA.

Profile On: Atlanta Police Department
A Partner in ending homelessness.

The Atlanta Police Department is giving people HOPE.
Through the Homeless Outreach and Proactive Enforcement (HOPE) program, officers regularly patrol streets and visit homeless shelters to spread the word about the health care, housing, employment, and other services VA provides to eligible Veterans. The officers also ask local businesses to post fliers and distribute wallet cards to Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The HOPE program is one tool in combating chronic homelessness in Atlanta, officer William Dorsey said. “It’s definitely making an impact.” More than once, a Veteran who used to be homeless has returned to thank him for help finding shelter. “That’s the best thing in our job.”
