ACCU Code of Conduct

ACCU is more than just a conference or organisation, it is a community of like-minded people who come together to discuss, debate and learn in a nurturing environment. To foster this atmosphere and to ensure a safe environment for all involved we therefore expect all our delegates, speakers, sponsors and volunteers to adhere to the following code of conduct. This code of conduct will be enforced by the conference organisers.

The Short Version

  • Be considerate, kind and helpful and avoid demeaning, discriminatory, harassing, hateful or physically threatening behaviour, speech and imagery.
  • Harassment or offensive behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated. We are committed to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices.
  • Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate in any form during the conference, including talks, workshops, social events, Twitter and other online media.
  • All debates, discussions and interactions that occur during the conference should be undertaken in a professional manner.

The Long Version

  • Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, technology choices, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
  • Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
  • Sponsors are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. In particular, sponsors should not use sexualised images, activities, or other material. Exhibition staff (including volunteers) should not use sexualised clothing/uniforms/costumes, or otherwise create a sexualised environment.
  • If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, the conference organisers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference with no refund.
  • If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of conference staff immediately. We will then work with you to decide on any steps to be taken.

This document is not exhaustive and we would like to draw on the spirit and community that defines ACCU. While we expect this document to be honoured by all participants, we also hope that you will approach it in that spirit, continuing as always to treat fellow community members with respect.
