Holiday Greetings from President Weinschrott:

I hope your elections went well and for those of you also involved with tax collection, may your season go smoothly as well.  Welcome to the first issue of the WMCA Monthly E-Newsletter. The WMCA Board of Directors met on December 5th and voted to discontinue the quarterly newsletter, “The Quill”, and switch to this monthly e-newsletter.  This is designed to bring you the latest updates and information from the WMCA, its Board and Committees and the latest educational opportunities in a shorter, quick read format on a more timely basis. If you have an article to contribute to a future e-newsletter, please email it to the WMCA Executive Director by the 5th of the month.

2015 Membership Dues

This is a reminder that WMCA membership runs on the calendar year.  So watch for your 2015 Membership Dues Email, which will be sent out on December 30th with a due date of January 31, 2015.  The dues for a renewing member will be $65 for 2015.  If you don't see your dues email when you return from the New Year's holiday, please contact the WMCA Executive Director.

The WMCA Board of Directors met on December 5th in Plover to discuss and pass a 2015 WMCA Budget.  For the fifth year in a row, the Board was looking at having to use WMCA fund balance in order to balance the budget.  The initial proposed 2015 Budget included a deficit of $24,573.20 which at the end of the day was reduced to a deficit of $10,648.20 with funds coming from Fund Balance if the deficit is not recovered from additional revenue sources. The Board recognized that it cannot continue to rely on fund balance and keep the WMCA in a favorable financial condition.  The dues for WMCA members were $45 for more than 10 years and this worked while the membership numbers grew substantially during that time.  Since then the membership numbers have plateaued and two years ago a small $5 increase was instituted.  That increase has not generated the revenue needed to help with continuing rising costs of doing business.  Furthermore, the Board of Directors would like to move forward with future plans of bringing more education into the clerk’s office through technology.  The Board recognized that it would be more responsible to set a small $15 increase this year rather than having to do a more substantial increase next year.

Did you know? - if you are working on becoming a certified clerk, one of the criteria is that you must be a member of the WMCA for at least three consecutive years.  Then, once you are certified, you need to maintain your membership or your certification will expire.

Educational Opportunity:
Athenian Dialogue - Mandela's Way

You still have time to register for the Athenian Dialogue coming in January at the IIMC Region VI Mid-Year meeting in Decorah, Iowa.  The book for this dialogue is Mandela's Way.  It is a profoundly inspiring book that captures the spirit of Nelson Mandela, distilling the South African leader's wisdom into 15 vital life lessons.  The class will be held on Friday, January 23, 2015 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, IA.  Download the Athenian Registration Form for full details.

What Is An Athenian Dialogue?
Dialogues are conversations that go beyond the usual knowledge recall and application process familiar to all municipal clerks in training seminars. They are unique because they explore leadership principles and practice, drawing on the insights contained in a book that all participants have read.

Dialogues are conversations in which clerks share their experience and understanding as it relates to the ideas of the author and the relevance of those ideas to their public leadership role.

What is the IIMC Region VI?
Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota make up Region VI of the IIMC Association.  This year the mid-year meeting will be hosted in Iowa at the beautiful and historic Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah, Iowa.  You do not have to be a member of the IIMC to attend the Athenian Dialogue or to go and check out the Region VI meeting to learn more about the IIMC.

You need to call the Hotel Winneschiek by December 22nd for the special pricing.  There are only king rooms left in our block.  Click on the following links for more information and to register:
