7 Shopping Secrets that Retailers Won't Tell You

"The stores have a plan,so you should too." --Nammoni Mammino, Bankrate.com

This article has a treasure trove of advice that is especially important this time of year. "You're not saving if you are actually spending more than your planned." I say this all of the time in workshops, "You didn't save money, you spent money!" It's really about re-framing things in your head. We all have to practice thinking clearly when it comes to money because stores and advertisers are very skilled at distracting us.  You can do it!

In Policing Fashion, Moms Find A New Power Online
"Companies are certainly more concerned when the people involved are moms, specifically. I mean, women in general, and moms in particular, control the vast majority of spending in households."--Ben Rattray, NPR.org

Ladies, we do have power and companies know it. We need to remember this. We may not always be on the crusade like the women in this article but remember that you do have power, even when making small purchases for your home or family.

Hello Ladies,

Welcome to a New Year and new newsletter format!

I hope that many of you will view the start of the new year as a time to set new financial goals. Take an afternoon this month to consider your monthly budget, spending habits, debts and re-evaluate. Ask yourself questions such as: How does my budget reflect my values? What debts do I want to see disappear in 2012?  What financial goals do I want to start or complete in 2012?
This winter, we want to support you in a variety of ways through our Debt Boot Camp education workshop series in Elkins Park and our Annual Celebration and Awards Breakfast.  And we are happy to announce the introduction of "Financial Fitness Clubs", designed to support you in a more personal way in your journey to financial stability.  Read more about this new program expansion below!

Happy New Year!

Partnership with Wal-Mart: Lunchtime Learning at the People's Emergency Center

This past fall, we partnered with an enthusiastic group in the Employment and Training Program at the People's Emergency Center (PEC) for a two-week lunch time education series. Wal-Mart generously donated refreshments including a selection of delicious muffins, cookies and drinks!  One of the PEC Employment and Training program students, Odyssey shared with the group her financial tip for success, "Always create a shopping list so you won't spend impulsively!"  A simple tip but one we should all remember; sticking to a list will truly help you not to over-spend.
