Technology Leadership Award Presented to Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facilities Engineering

AUSTIN, Texas (April 10, 2014) – Fiatech’s annual Celebration of Technology & Innovation (CETI) Awards Gala was held on April 1, the second day of the 2014 Technology Conference & Showcase, at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa, to celebrate and promote new and emerging technologies, as well as significant strides in advancing innovation in research and development. The final, most prestigious award of the evening, The James B. Porter, Jr. Award for Technology Leadership, was presented to Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facilities Engineering (CIFE).

This award is a tribute to Jim Porter, who was instrumental in establishing Fiatech and whose vision, leadership, technical acumen, commitment to people, and tireless efforts have advanced the capital projects industry.

According to Fiatech Director, Ray Topping, “CIFE embodies the spirit of the Porter Award with vision, leadership, and passion for technology advancement. CIFE has been at the forefront in the industry in advancing virtual reality applications and in leading practices for educating students with advanced technology skills. CIFE continues to chart the pathway for technology advancement. Selecting CIFE for the Porter Award is a well-deserved recognition for the entire CIFE faculty, students, and supporting partners that have sustained CIFE’s inspiring technology leadership for over 25 years.

John Kunz, the Executive Director of CIFE, accepted the award on behalf of all twenty-five faculty members including Director Martin Fischer and Director Calvin Kam. CIFE is in the midst of a seven-year plan to performance breakthrough, challenging the industry to reduce the project cycle time for major commercial structures. CIFE’s approach to leading performance improvement is built on advancing Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). The CIFE Program provides classroom training in the iRoom environment, a flexible multi-user interactive meeting and classroom space, equipped with three large touch screen displays, along with web cameras and microphones. VDC is the integrated use of multi-disciplinary computer models to improve project performance. It is an important strategic method for many large and small organizations in the AEC field.
