Greetings from the Parents Program at Seaver College
September 2014

They're back! Our campus is alive once again with students, faculty, and staff. Welcome to our first year parents. We enjoyed meeting you at NSO! Parents of second, third, fourth, and the occasional "victory-lap" students, we welcome you back as well. Thank you for blessing us with your children. We are excited to watch them grow in purpose, service, and leadership over the next few months. We hope you will find these monthly e-mails beneficial to navigating the 2014 - 2015 academic year.

If you are interested in how to support your student during this initial time at college, click here for an article written for parents just like you.

Special congrats to Robin Aguilera from Rancho Cucamonga, CA who is the winner of the NSO "Get Involved" raffle. Please contact Kim Barkis to redeem your one night stay at the Villa Graziadio.

Keep up with Events at Payson Library!

Ameerah Haq, United Nations Under-Secretary General for Field Support will be speaking in the Surfboard Room at Payson Library on Friday, September 19, 2014, from 2:30-3:30pm. Ms. Haq’s career in the UN has spanned nearly 40 years, with postings in Timor, Sudan, and Afghanistan, and culminating in this position where she is responsible for directing the UN’s $10 billion, 122,000 person peacekeeping operations.  She will be speaking about these peacekeeping efforts in her talk, and will also touch on the role of women in peace and development.

Micky Moore

Payson Library is currently hosting the exhibition Behind the Scenes: The Micky Moore Collection. Moore was a child star turned second-unit director, a transition in which he was guided by the great director Cecil B. DeMille.  He had a knack for action sequences, working on some of the most famous movies of the twentieth-century—Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Patton, Raiders of the Lost Ark and more.

The exhibit features a diverse array of archival materials documenting Moore’s career, including photographs, scripts, storyboards, correspondence, and more.  We would love to see parents at our reception honoring this exhibition and the gift of Moore’s archive to the University.  It is on September 27, from 3:30-5pm on the first floor of Payson Library.

In both instances, guests should RSVP to Jeanette.woodburn@pepperdine.edu

Pepperdine Chamber Choir

This past July, 32 of our very talented singers in the Pepperdine Chamber Choir embarked on a two-week tour to Swizterland and the Czech Republic. While in Switzerland the students rehearsed and gave performances including a very special performance at the Bethanie House for the Elderly and Geneva’s magnificent St. Peter’s Cathedral. The second week of the tour was spent in Prague, Czech Republic where the Pepperdine Choir joined with choirs from the US and Europe to perform for the Prague Choral Festival.

Pepperdine Chamber Choir Prague Concert

Pepperdine’s very own Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Ryan Board, was the principal conductor for the choral festival and therefore had the privilege of making his international orchestral conducting debut with one of Europe’s finest orchestras.

The whole experience was incredibly powerful, and it is safe to say that for these students, life has changed because of the tour.  The high-level professional musical collaboration, the sharing of faith through song with diverse communities overseas, and the enduring bonds of friendship that were created through the experience, have left these fine students refreshed and invigorated and ready lead others towards similar mountaintop experiences.  Congratulations to these fine singers!

The Pepperdine Chamber Choir will embark on a domestic tour this January to the southern United States.

Weisman Museum of Art Presents "Environment Impact" Exhibit

Their art reveals the complex ways nature functions in society—ranging from a source of beauty to be admired to a resource to be respected, utilized, and conserved. Works by artists such as Ed Ruscha, Joe Goode, Peter Alexander, Chuck Arnoldi, and many younger talents capture our complex and multifaceted connection with our environment.

Open Tuesday - Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM, and one hour prior to most performances through intermission. Admission free. Please call 310.506.4851 for more information, or click here.
