In a word – Inspire

As I sit down to write this, my first article as chapter President, I wonder where to begin and what to write. I am told this communication should set the tone for the year and articulate the chapter goals as well as my goal as President.

I must begin by thanking Steve Raymond, our now past-president (2011 President), for setting the stage for what is sure to be a banner year in 2012. Late last year Steve, along with Scott Draper (President Elect), Lori Ackerman (President Elect-Elect and Director of Programs) and I met for lunch to discuss the long-term vision for the chapter. Generally speaking we came up with the following:

  • To continue to promote the financial planning profession
  • Continue to provide opportunity for our members

As I think about setting the tone and articulating my goal, as your chapter president, I am reminded of a concept I’ve recently explored around goal setting. The concept is that a stated goal can often be too vague or too directed toward a particular activity, for example “provide opportunity” or “host/sponsor three events during the year”. But what if instead of stating a goal, what if you really challenged yourself, if you dug deeper and selected a word that could be used as a beacon or as a guide, to be used on a day to day basis, a word that bolstered you and provides direction for your actions, a word that you own or that you’d like the world to would use in describing you, what would that word be? My word, as your chapter president, is “inspire”.

 

This year’s Board of Directors inspires me and I’d like to share this with you. In January I had the pleasure of presiding over my first BOD meeting where we discussed our strategic plan for the coming year. You will see articles, below, from many of the Directors (other Directors in future newsletters) letting you know what we are working on for the year and inviting you to become involved. But these articles are more than just information, they were written because these Directors are excited about their role, they are passionate about making our chapter a vibrant association that promotes the planning profession and provides opportunity to our members.

 

As I think about the challenges before us in the profession, there are many. Will there be a uniform standard of care? Who will regulate us in the future and how onerous will compliance become? What role will this year’s politics play on our economy and capital markets? How will technology change our business model? Yet, it occurs to me that while much is unknown, we have the world of opportunity open to us to take our budding profession and shape its future, to become involved and to make a difference.

 

I invite you to get involved, even if your involvement consists solely of attending a chapter meeting, or four. Our program networking provides you the opportunity to share your thoughts and learn from your colleagues. Or better yet, get involved and be honored, as we honored some of our finest during our December meeting. The opportunity is before you, what will you do with it?

Financial Planning Days A Huge Success

Financial Planning Day was held at West Sacramento City Hall on October 8th. Thanks to the combined support and sponsorship of the FPA, the CFP Board, the Foundation for Financial Planning, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the City of West Sacramento, the event offered one-to-one consultations with financial planners, as well as timely presentations on important financial topics, including home ownership, debt and credit management, retirement planning, and investments. Keynote speakers included West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon.

Financial Planning Day events were also held at Oakland City Hall on October 1st, at UC Hastings School of the Law in San Francisco on the 22nd, and at Dr. Martin Luther King Library in San Jose on October 29th. The results? Over 170 volunteer financial planners donated their time and expertise to provide valuable financial advice to over 900 people!

What a great year 2011 was for Pro-bono! The highlight was the successful Financial Planning Day event we held in October. It was a year-long project and we cannot say thank you enough to all of the people involved. We look forward to another successful event in 2012.

Looking ahead to 2012, there is a lot I would like to accomplish, but we need volunteers! We would like to have some events for Financial Literacy month during April and add more events during Financial Planning Week in October.

I have started speaking with someone at Mutual Housing Association. They offer affordable homes to low-income families and have started offering financial education and assistance to their residents. Debbie Grose and I have also attended a Bank On meeting. Bank On works with un-banked and under-banked people in various communities. We are excited about the role that the FPANC Pro-bono can play in their program.

I am also interested in hearing about pro-bono efforts FPANC members may already be involved with and if you feel we can be a resource.
