The heart of Financial Planning TM
President's Message - Debbie Grose, CFP®

Debbie Grose

What a busy and vibrant chapter we have!! I’d like to begin this letter by touching on our chapter goals: Promoting the Financial Planning Profession and Providing Opportunity for FPANC Members. With these goals in mind, I am delighted to share details about the activities your Board of Directors have been diligently working on, and to highlight the latest happenings within our chapter.

The following is a line-up of chapter events for the remainder of the year. Many of the events you may already be aware of, while others, not so much:

  • 9/20 – Jr. Financial Planning Day at CSUS
  • 10/4 – Meet Your State Regulator – Joint meeting: CA Dept. of Corporations & FPANC
  • 10/13 – Financial Planning Day at West Sacramento City Hall
  • 10/25 – Practitioner Open House at Planned Solutions
  • 11/9 – Fall Expo at CSUS Alumni Center (regular chapter meeting on steroids)
  • TBA - Internships Work Webinar

Because this may be the first you are learning about some of the events, below is a discussion with more details. Some descriptions may be a brief, others longer. But in each instance, the board member responsible is indicated so you will know who to reach out to if you want more information or would like to get involved.

This fall is a busy time for Pro-Bono. We have three events set to take place!

  • Thursday, September 20 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at California State University, Sacramento. We are looking for thirteen volunteers to give on-one-one advice to the students of CSUS. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Jenny Hood at: jhood@cmeyers.com or (916) 927-6487.

  • Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 am – 3:00pm. Our Second Annual Greater Sacramento Financial Planning Day. This event will take place at the City Hall of West Sacramento. We need lots of volunteers to give one-on-one advice and/or presentations to the residents of the Greater Sacramento area. This event had over 160 attendees last year and the steering committee has increased its promotion and we hope to have an even bigger turn out in 2012! If you would like to volunteer for this event, please register at: www.FinancialPlanningDays.org/GreaterSacramentoVolunteer

  • October – (TBD). Thanks to our President Debbie Grose, I have been working with a foster care service to set-up a one-day event that will provide presentations on financial topics relevant to teenaged children and also give the teenagers and their foster parents a chance to sit down one-on-one with a financial planner to ask any questions they may have. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please contact Jenny Hood at: jhood@cmeyers.com or (916) 927-6487.

One last thing, I would like to give a big thank you to the Board and the members of the FPA of Northern California! Everyone has been very supportive and it has been inspiring to see how eager our members are to give back to the community that we live in. These events would not be a success without your help! So again, thank you for taking the time to volunteer!

If you are interested in serving on the Pro-Bono committee, please email: Jenny Hood at jhood@cmeyers.com.

FPA’s Grassroots Efforts

From time to time there is legislation, either national or state; that I feel I’d like to make my opinion known to my elected officials. But who has the time? One not only has to write the piece buy figure out how to send it to and how. We are all busy and have to make choices about how we spend our time and energy.

Just in case you haven’t heard about it, the California legislature is considering a bill, SB 459, which affects Independent Contractor status. I decided to make my opinion known.

FPA has taken the chore out of this with its grassroots site at : http://www.fpanet.org/professionals/GovernmentRelations
/GrassrootsEfforts/
.

I went to this FPA website. You start with setting up your profile. Updating mine took maybe 2 minutes. Once you enter your home zip code, they identify the elected officials for you. Then all relevant national and state issues are listed. You can click to Read More or to Take Action. I clicked on Take Action because I already know what I wanted to do. The website identified the correct legislator, had check boxes for email, fax, phone or letter. For email the subject line was already completed and my next choice was a form letter or a blank. I read the form letter, it worked for me so I hit the GO! Button. That’s it!

From the time I decided I’d like to do something until it was done and I was off to my next task was about 5 minutes. 5 Minutes! It has taken my much longer to write this than it took to take action on an important issue.

Try it!
