Building on Our Strengths

As part of my preparation as President-Elect of the Northern California chapter, I recently attended the FPA Chapter Leaders Conference in Denver.  At the conference I learned of FPA National’s recent efforts to strengthen the Financial Planning Assocation by focusing
on its strengths and providing additional value to its core members.  As your local chapter president, I would like to do the same.  Debbie Grose and other chapter leaders have helped to re-energize our organization and provide new opportunities for us as members.  We have a strong new board in place and I plan to build on that energy.  The Board will be meeting for a strategic planning meeting on January 15th in order to set the stage.  Please pass on any feedback you have about the chapter to any board member and we will use that as we set our plan for the year.

We appreciate all the members of the Northern California chapter, both old and new, and the contributions you’ve made.  Please get to know us better this year, find something that you are passionate about and contribute to our success!

I am looking forward to joining the FPA of Northern California Board of Directors for 2013 as the new Director of Programs. I am very excited to get to know and work with such an accomplished group of professionals. I have some very big shoes to fill and hope to bring you some great speakers and topics that will make you excited about coming to our meetings.

As always, if you have any suggestions regarding topics and/or speakers I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at

Far West Roundup Recap
Far West - Don St Clair1
Don St. Clair

What do you do during the dog days of Summer? Why attend the 23rd Annual Far West Roundup!

Held on the campus of UC Santa Cruz, the Far West Roundup is an informal retreat for financial planning practitioners and those intending to enter the financial planning profession.

The Roundup is also unusual in that there are no sponsors.  Most of the speakers are fellow planners and professionals in related fields who have been recommended to us by attendees.  In addition you receive 15 units of CFP CEU's.

This year one of the featured professional speakers was our own Don St. Clair.  As you can see from the picture above, Don got our attention with his opening remarks.  Don examined the different spending constraints and consumption opportunities of households, corporations, and sovereign governments, specifically as they related to personal finances and household debt.  Don's presentation rang true as the Fiscal Cliff loomed during the month of December. Remember to save the first week of August to join financial planner like Don to discuss the latest topic on the financial planning frontier.
