President's Message - Lori Ackerman, CFP®

Lori Ackerman
There are many exciting things happening this year. We have developed two new Board positions to bring some needed skills and perspectives to our chapter leadership. The first position is Director of Technology, and Ethan Green has accepted the position to help lead our chapter to a stronger web presence. The second position is Director for Young Professionals. This position will help align new planners and students closer with the chapter, bringing their skills and unique points of view. We are currently looking for a student or new planner to fill this position. Board member, Aimee Gamez, is also looking for a Co-Chair for Director of Programs. Please be sure to read her request below under “Programs Corner”.

Janice Dunn, who has expanded the scope and efficiency of the Sponsorship Director, has stepped aside in order to focus all her considerable talent and energy on the Fall Expo. Chris Reese has accepted the role and brings the perspective of being a sponsor himself. His deep understanding of what sponsors want and need will bring a synergy that will benefit both the sponsors and the chapter.

Our Membership Director, Orlando Batturaro, has been working with Chris Reese and the membership committee to bring a Membership Appreciation Event to the chapter this spring. Members have told us that they enjoy the opportunity to meet and network in a relaxed environment and this sounds like it will be lots of fun. Those who attended the event at Mas a few years ago had a great time – at least I did!

Things have been busy with FPANC’s pro bono efforts! We managed to give three presentations to local high school students on the importance of saving during, “America Saves Week.” One of the teachers informed me that the presentation sparked many conversations in later classes and he was excited to see his students start to think about saving.

Personally, I am getting involved with our local chapter of Junior Achievement. Starting in mid-March I will go into a local classroom and have five-30 minutes sessions where I help facilitate lessons and discussions on financial literacy. I am excited to be getting involved with this program and I hope to inspire others to do the same.

At our February meeting there was a lot of enthusiasm on the importance of teaching our local students about financial literacy. I would really enjoy assembling a committee to develop a program that we could take to local schools and get the students engaged and motivated about financial literacy. There is an overwhelming amount of resources. I would really appreciate having a committee to help sort through and create a program from all of the available material. Getting involved is a great way to get to know your local FPA community! Please contact me at if you are interested.

While I have been discussing a lot about financial literacy and students, I am always open to other ideas to get our chapter involved in the community. Please contact me with any thoughts!

The Foundation for Financial Planning, a nonprofit charity, is the only organization solely devoted to supporting the delivery of pro bono financial planning. Learn all about the great things they are doing.

Co-Chair needed for Director of Programs

Being the Director of Programs for the FPANC has been such a great experience for me. I have met and worked with a lot of great people in the past two years. Sadly my career has taken me in a different direction and I will not be continuing my role into 2015. I would like to give someone a great opportunity to network, get involved, and to be a part of a wonderful team to continue to bring great speakers to our organization. This person will assist me in completing the 2014 program calendar and to take over the planning for 2015. I have a brilliant committee made up of the industry’s most influential planners in our area supporting the position. I encourage you to reach out, get involved in our chapter, and sign up for this great opportunity.

I can be reached at I look forward to hearing from you.

As the newly-elected President of FPA of California, I would like to update you on our recent activities and plans for this year. As you may recal
l, FPA of California (FPA of CA) is a coalition of the 13 local FPA chapters in California organized for advocacy and outreach to our State’s elected and appointed officials. Each chapter has a representative on the FPA of CA council and, collectively, we represent nearly 3,000 FPA members and over 500,000 clients.

Since forming our organization in 2013, the council has made great strides in building relationships with State government legislators and regulators impacting our profession. Kudos to our founding President Evelyn Zohlen, Chairman Steve Johnson and all of last year’s council for laying the foundation for our future success!

One of the cornerstones for our advocacy program is to showcase our chapter and national pro bono activities in financial literacy. This underscores our professionalism and commitment to the community and enhances our credibility with state officials. Toward this end we are continuing to collaborate with the State Controller (John Chiang)’s office on their California Financial Literacy Advisory Committee (created by AB 597). The Controller’s office seeks to develop this Committee as a clearinghouse to inform the public about the available community resources. Mark Prendergast (our FPA of CA Treasurer and representative from the Orange County FPA) is our representative on this Committee. Mark is working with the Controller’s office to coordinate our FPA Financial Planning Days in October with the numerous other financial literacy events currently sponsored by various groups such as CalCPA and Jump$Start. We will keep you informed as this develops. Continue reading the full article here

A Tribute to Albert Balliet, 1927-2014
By Cynthia Meyers, MBA, CFP®

On January 25th the Sacramento financial planning community lost one of its founders. At the age of 86, just three days short of his 64-year anniversary of marriage to his loving wife, Barbara, Al Balliet passed away peacefully, five months after he was diagnosed with cancer. Those of you who knew Al will not be surprised to learn that he remained positive and joyful to the end.

Al joined the fledging industry of financial planning in 1970 after having worked in the chemical industry for over 20 years, where he put his B.S. in Chemistry from Muhlenburg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania to good use. What he came to enjoy so much about financial planning was that it reflected two of the things he cared about most: numbers and people.
