ETOA's New Webinar Series


ETOA has recently launched its new webinar series, bringing relevant topics and experts together to produce informative and easily-accessed industry updates. Given the current political debate, the first two webinars have been on the issue of Brexit – or the forthcoming referendum in the UK on its membership of the European Union. 

Recordings of the webinars are now available: the first edition ‘Currency Chaos: the Price of a Referendum’ was put together with ETOA member Currency UK and tackled the question of foreign exchange with regard to the referendum decision. Our industry partners the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI) presented the second webinar ‘China and the UK in a Post-Brexit World’, which discussed the relationship between the UK and China.

City Fair Conference

This year’s City Fair Conference on the morning of Tuesday 21st June will be exploring the role of gastronomy in tourism. Over three sessions, including a panel which is part of London Technology Week, we will look in turn at how destinations market themselves, product ideas and to what extent technology and food tourism are the perfect match. We have a broad range of speakers from BBC Worldwide, Barcelona Tourism, the Gastronomic Cities Project, Trafalgar, the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco, Amadeus, Toposophy and Ghent Tourism. The event is free for all companies attending the City Fair Workshop on Monday.

Student placements and Festival of Learning at 
Bournemouth University, UK

Bournemouth University Department of Tourism & Hospitality is recognised globally as a leading contributor to knowledge creation and dissemination in tourism and hospitality. We are proud of our industry collaborations that enable us to co-create best professional practice through constant interaction and engagement. As part of our co-creation we are keen that our students gain great experience at meaningful placements whilst they can bring cutting edge knowledge to our industry partners. 

Take a Bournemouth University Student on a placement. Student placements are a flexible and cost-effective way of bringing fresh, new talent into your organisation. Many of our postgraduate students are international and have specific language and cultural skills that will contribute your global agenda.

Placements are normally on a fixed-term appointment between 10 and 15 months (minimum 40 weeks), but shorter options are also available. Students are paid around £15k depending on their duties and location. Placements are arranged by BU’s dedicated Placements and Careers team, who support both employers and students throughout the process. This support service is free to employers.

ETOA in Barcelona

ETOA recently met with Barcelona City Hall to discuss plans for managing tourism in a city that has seen visitor numbers rise from 1.2m in 1992 to closer to 9m last year. The city is one of six already taking part in a visitor pressure project run by the Centre for Excellence in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure (CELTH) which has input from ETOA and aims to provide practical solutions for destinations dealing with the sort of success that Barcelona has seen. As part of ETOA’s 2020 initiative we will be holding an event in late November just before the EIBTM fair looking at tourism in the city and the relationship between visitors, the destination and its residents. More details will be available over the summer.

6th Annual European Tourism Summit in the Alps

Lucerne, Switzerland


The annual European Tourism Summit in the Alps on the
11th October in Lucerne, Switzerland will have a particular focus on cross-border travel and marketing. In 2016, Europe as a destination has been put under the stress of migration, the upcoming UK referendum and border security. At a regional, national and international level there is a need for joined-up thinking, particularly with a view to long-haul markets where other options around the world are very attractive and competitive. There will be analysis of the overall state of play as well as a look at sectors such as river cruising that depend on cross-border cooperation. The summit is free for ETOA members to attend and is kindly supported by Lucerne and Switzerland Tourism, Swiss Travel System, the Swiss Transport Museum and local hotel partners.
