Hotel Villa Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, Spain

You can’t wander far in Jerez without stumbling on sherry or something to do with it. This five-star boutique hotel, on the leafy outskirts of Jerez town, was built in the Fifties as a private villa for the Soto Domecq family and it’s still a comfortable retreat, with infinity pool and gardens.

Location

8 / 10

The hotel is set back from the road on a leafy avenue amid gardens. It isn’t the most central hotel in Jerez but it’s certainly peaceful and private. The main shopping streets and sights like the cathedral and Alcázar are about 20 minutes’ walk away and Jerez’s famous riding school - the Real Escuela del Arte Ecuestre - is about 10 minutes. Jerez airport is five miles away.

Style and Character

8 / 10

The house was built in 1955 in the style of a 19th-century villa, with high ceilings, marble fireplaces, marble floors and gilt-framed oil paintings on the walls. Furnishings likewise complete the faux-old-fashioned but elegant air with Louis XIV-style chairs, chintz drapes and the odd original dark wood antique.

Service and Facilities

8 / 10

Staff are multilingual, friendly and polite and can help book visits to sherry bodegas as well as the key sights. There’s an infinity pool in the neatly landscaped gardens, while inside there’s a small library and an elegant lounge with television.

Rooms

8 / 10

The 18 rooms are a decent size and have high ceilings with pale primrose walls and understated chintz drapes and bedspreads. Beds are comfortable and the marble bathrooms feel luxurious with twin basins, fluffy towels and hydro-massage tubs as well as walk-in showers. The best rooms face the gardens and pool while others face the hotel’s front drive and gardens.

Food and Drink

8 / 10

A good quality buffet breakfast is charged separately from the rooms and served in the elegant restaurant dining room, or in summer, on the terrace near the pool. There’s a good selection of fresh breads, croissants, ham, salamis and cheeses, yoghurts, cereals and fruit and hot dishes including eggs, bacon and sausages can be prepared to order at no extra charge.

For lunch and dinner, the restaurant serves traditional local dishes such as grilled sea bass with potato puree, or Iberian pork medallions with mushrooms cooked in oloroso sherry (average mains €17 [£15]). There’s also a small bar next to the lounge and television room.
