| | | | Dear SGE Alumni & Friends, | It is the end of one era and the start of another: after a 19-year run, this past spring saw our final cohort complete the SGE Immersion program. As I’ve expressed to students and alumni, it is a bittersweet moment for me, both personally and professionally. On the one hand, since launching the program in 2006, I have loved working with MBAs and other graduate students from across the university on projects that were always at the cutting edge of business and sustainability. |
| Often, those projects involved issues that in following years would move more toward the mainstream as other organizations grappled with how to approach sustainability as a strategic opportunity in the marketplace. | The program was always seen as tough, but also rewarding, by those of you who participated in it over time. My favorite description of it from alumni was, “the best program you never want to do again!” We were proud to have been recognized by peer institutions and to have received awards for curriculum innovation. At the same time, though, enrollment in the program had declined consistently since 2020. Changes in the broader residential MBA program that reflected current MBA interests impacted all immersions that still offered client-facing projects. This spring, a decision was made to retire the Sustainable Global Enterprise (SGE), Semester in Strategic Operations (SSO), and Investment Research and Asset Management (IRAM) Immersions. | This, of course, comes at a time when issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and inequality continue to grow and impact business operations, profitability, and competitiveness. Our challenge, then, becomes how best to work with the MBA program to redesign what is offered to residential students so they are prepared to lead and fulfill the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business’ mission to “inspire leaders to build sustainable, shared prosperity.” | As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise (join us in New York City in October for our celebration event!), it was already our plan to engage alumni and others in assessing what new programs, activities, and curriculum we should consider developing for the next decade. We hope you will take time in the coming months to not only share your memories and experiences through our Memory Lane project, but also help us determine what skills and knowledge we should ensure students acquire to be successful leaders in the years to come by participating in one of our upcoming workshops – Envisioning the Future of MBA Education for Social and Environmental Impact. | This is a busy time, and we hope you will join us in celebrating many of our highlights over the past six months, including: | - The launch of the new Semlitz Family Sustainability Fellows Program in collaboration with Cornell Atkinson. The new program will provide partial tuition funding for three MBA students per year, as well as three early career researchers (PhD and Post-docs) over the next five years.
- The collaboration with the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business continued with a Food Finance Forum held at the New York Federal Reserve in April and will conclude this month with the publication of several reports related to the opportunities for private sector investments to address food insecurity in New York State.
- Establishing a collaboration with the US Forest Service focused on sustainable economic development around El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico.
- Working with the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR) to organize a series of sustainability roundtables on travel and tourism during climate week in NYC in September.
- With support from Cornell Atkinson, advising The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA) on their efforts to develop a set of standards and certifications meant to increase the adoption of renewable energy projects.
- Creating a new program to engage journalists in how they understand and report about sustainability in the travel and tourism sector.
| A lot has been accomplished over the last two decades, and we look forward to working with you to ensure we continue to accomplish more in the next 20 years. | Please continue to share your updates and be sure to drop by to visit when you are on campus! All Centers and Institutes of the SC Johnson College of Business are relocated to Statler Hall. Come find us in Statler 289! | | Sincerely, | Mark Milstein | Faculty Director of the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise |

| | Sadly, the 2024 SGE Immersion cohort this past spring – the 19th – was also the last. The great group of 13 students – 7 MBAs and 6 non-Johnson graduate students from Brooks (public policy), CALS, Engineering, and Nolan (hotel school) – completed practicum projects with Buzzup, Gellert Global Group, Honda, The Nature Conservancy, and US Forest Service. |
| The cohort was able to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime moment in April as we celebrated SGEclipse by traveling to Syracuse together and enjoying a day that climaxed with a parting of the clouds just enough to take in the moment of totality of the solar eclipse. We took that as a positive omen, as we now turn attention to developing new curriculum to engage students in experiential learning opportunities around sustainability! |

| Semlitz Family Sustainability Fellows Program |
| In June, we launched a new fellows program in partnership with Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability. Established through the generosity of Stephen Semlitz (ILR ’75, MBA ‘76) & Cathy Glaser (ILR ‘74), Semlitz Fellows will support early career researchers (PhDs and Postdocs) and MBA students interested in careers in sustainability leadership. Each cohort of six Semlitz Fellows will deepen skills necessary for identifying and anticipating opportunities and potential pitfalls in sustainability and business to become more adept at navigating the intersection of the fields of science and business to address sustainability issues. For more information about the program, contact Mark Milstein at mm462@cornell.edu. |
| | In April, we joined our partners at the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business to hold a Food Finance Forum focused on facilitating private sector investment to address food insecurity in New York State which was hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. As the FoodMap NY project comes to an end, we will be releasing an executive report highlighting opportunities in the domain, as well as a set of technical reports spotlighting efforts in controlled environment agriculture, food-as-medicine, healthy food in the retail sector, supply chain & infrastructure, food finance, and food & nutrition assistance. |

| Food Industry Management Program |
| | Renewable Energy Project Standards |
| In January, with support from Cornell Atkinson, we began a collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and the Clean Energy Buyers Association on their efforts to address ecological and social issues that impede, slow down, or halt the development of critical renewable energy projects. Our engagement involved a student team from the SGE Immersion Program, as well as ongoing membership on the steering committee tasked with developing a set of standards and a certification to promote best practices for the integration of environmental and social concerns within the industry that can increase the rate of renewable energy project adoption. |

| Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program (STAMP) |
| In January, the Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program (STAMP) began what we hope to be a multi-year collaboration with the US Forest Service (USFS) in El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico. Our first project involved a student team from the SGE Immersion Program who focused on evaluating how USFS could improve revenue for El Yunque’s visitor center, El Portal, which had been rebuilt in 2022 following extensive damage from hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017. |
| Despite record growth of travelers in Puerto Rico and El Yunque in recent years, visitors to El Portal have been declining. STAMP supported the student team’s efforts, including a field trip to collect data over spring break. The next phase of work will focus on helping USFS develop a comprehensive, long-term strategic plan that promotes local economic development rooted in community involvement and environmental stewardship. | In March, the Center welcomed a new STAMP Executive-in-Residence, Lebawit Lily Girma, a senior journalist with a 15-year trajectory working to elevate sustainable tourism coverage in major consumer and trade media relations. Her residency is dedicated to enhancing journalists’ knowledge of the field of sustainable destination management to inform their reporting. She will be supporting a cohort of 25 journalists as they take the eCornell Sustainable Tourism Destination Management course later this year and participate in interactive online sessions focused on how course concepts can be integrated into travel and tourism storytelling globally. | The African Leadership University (ALU), working in cooperation with eCornell, will begin to distribute the Center’s Sustainable Tourism Destination Management course across Africa in 2024. To spread the knowledge further, STAMP will work with ALU School of Wildlife Conservation to design a series of hybrid course programs in the coming year to train the trainers at ALU. | Intrepid Travel, a Certified B Corp, is supporting a cohort of its team members from around the world to take the Sustainable Tourism Destination Management eCornell course as part of the company’s formal learning and development program starting in mid-2024. |

CSC also continued working with the Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program (STAMP) to develop a virtual tool for businesses and governments negatively impacted by tourism. The Sustainable Chambers team pivoted to working with a chamber member, Hair Color Art, to set up a recycling system and implementation plan for other sustainability initiatives. The Sustainable Beverage team began a partnership with Three Brothers Winery, covering a range of topics such as sustainable labeling, carbon capture for brewing, wastewater sludge alternatives, and B-Corp certification. The Sustainable Branding team focused on club website updates and developing an internal brand toolkit; next semester they will work with The Learning Farm. The Carbon Calculators team built on their existing partnership with Carbini and started working with LaMorte Electric and Stor. Finally, CSC continued its long-term work with the SWEEP Standard, integrating a campus standard and a pilot gap analysis for universities with the long-term goal of getting Cornell SWEEP Certified. |
