Deeper Dialogue: Teaching with Poverty in Mind

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE), General Education Leadership Network (GELN), Michigan Virtual University (MVU), Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (MI ASCD), and the Michigan School Improvement Facilitators Network (MSIFN) have collaborated to create a book study that will provide further learning and reflecting beyond what the Fall 2016 School Improvement Conference covered. If you were unable to attend the conference, or want to continue the conversation, please join the Deeper Dialogue: Teaching with Poverty in Mind book study. State Continuing Education Clock Hours are available. If you wish to purchase the book, you can do so online. Please use code MIAFF when ordering.

AdvancED Michigan Professional Learning Opportunities

Be sure to check out the calendar of upcoming professional learning opportunities offered by AdvancED Michigan. If the dates listed do not fit your schedule, an AdvancED staff member can provide a custom workshop at your school, district or Educational Service Agency (ESA)/Independent School District (ISD). For more information about on-site workshops, please contact Bethany Zito.

Continuous School Improvement Process

At this point in the school year, you should consider working on the following tasks:

  • Begin building a School Process Profile using MDE’s School Systems Review (SSR) OR AdvancED’s Interim Self Assessment (ISA)/Self Assessment (SA) – NOTE: This is due in March.
  • Check the status of Title funds for each school that receives them. Has the grant been approved?
  • Identify steps to address challenges and/or barriers
  • Provide the School Board with an update on the status of the School Improvement Plan
  • Review and/or plan Perception Data collection from all stakeholders – NOTE: Keep in mind there are video tutorials available both on creating eProve™ surveys and creating reports in eProve™ surveys.
Improvement Plan Assurance

Most entities should have their School Improvement Plan or Single Building District Improvement Plan assigned by now. Some entities may need some guidance to locate the new Improvement Plan Assurance. Like the diagnostics, you can create a new Improvement Plan Assurance directly from the School Improvement Plan screen by using the blue pencil icon. Additionally, you can use the Start an Assurance button from the Assurances tab. Please contact the School Improvement Support Unit at MDE if you need further guidance.
