School Improvement Plan - September 1

AdvancED Fall Conference, October 20-21, 2016

The AdvancED Michigan Fall Conference 2016 reveals the new AdvancED Performance Standards and reviews protocol to guide institutions through a personalized and meaningful improvement experience. The conference uncovers factors that contribute to success and offers strategies and approaches to develop, execute and measure goals for school improvement.

Keynote, Dr. Stephanie Hirsh, Executive Director of Learning Forward, will provide a deep understanding of the power of professional learning and how the teacher agency is vital to educator growth and positive student outcomes. Dr. Hirsh will facilitate a teacher panel to foster meaningful dialogue focused on the power of teacher involvement in professional learning.

Preparing for the MDE Fall School Improvement Conference

ASCD author Eric Jensen is the featured keynote at the Fall 2016 School Improvement Conference held in Lansing November 21 - 22. Jensen is a former teacher who grew up in San Diego, California. With a Ph.D. in Human Development, he synthesizes brain research and develops practical applications for K-12 educators.

On November 21, Jensen will present the keynote and two breakout sessions focusing on “Teaching and Engaging with Poverty in Mind”. Eric Jensen’s book, Teaching with Poverty in Mind, will be discussed. This powerful day explores both the science and the specific classroom strategies to reach students of poverty.

On day two, Dr. Jensen will dig deeper by looking at tools for engagement. Participants will get a fabulous update of Eric Jensen’s popular book of the same name, Tools for Engagement. This session is highly practical, very energizing and gives you many specific classroom-tested ideas. It is ideal for both elementary and secondary staff.

Request for Proposals to present at the conference are being accepted on the MIEM website until September 30. Registration will be available by the end of August.

Baseline Data for Consideration

The focus of the Fall 2016 School Improvement Conference is Teaching with Poverty in Mind. As such, it is important that we all take a look at how this single indicator is reflected in student achievement data, statewide, and where we are in this regard. The first year of MSTEP data (2014-2015) indicates the gap between economically disadvantage and non-economically disadvantaged students is not shrinking--at least not at the statewide level. As you prepare to attend the conference and for the beginning of school this fall, it may be helpful to look at your local data through this lens and use that as baseline information as you implement your school improvement strategies and activities.

MDE will add the 2015-2016 MSTEP data to this table as soon as it becomes available. That updated information will be available at the conference.
