AdvancED welcomes Dr. Kathleen Smith as the new Director for the AdvancED Virginia Managing Office. Having recently retired as Director for the Office of School Improvement with the Virginia Department of Education, Dr. Smith says, “What a wonderful opportunity, I am excited to embark on this new role. I look forward to working with our public and nonpublic schools as I continue to pursue my passion of helping schools improve. I have the utmost of respect for what AdvancED stands for—top quality school improvement processes and accreditation services.”

Dr. Smith has been an educator since 1975. She received her doctorate from The College of William and Mary. Her dissertation, The Impact of District Climate on Student Achievement, was a culmination of her desire to support school systems in finding systemic avenues to improve outcomes for students.

In addition to her career experience in school and school system improvement, Dr. Smith also has served as a special educator, alternative education specialist, career and technical director, pre-school specialist, and school improvement specialist. Dr. Smith’s career experience provides a rich background enabling her to support schools and school systems and has allowed her to work with diverse student populations.

You can reach Dr. Smith at ksmith@advanc-ed.org or 888.413.3669, ext. 5660.

External Review Team Service a Powerful Experience
Serving on an AdvancED External Review is a powerful experience for any educator and provides the opportunity to make a difference for another school or school system. AdvancED Virginia invites you to apply your leadership skills and knowledge by participating on a school or school system External Review. Lead Evaluators and External Review Team members will see first-hand how peers address similar challenges.  Volunteers also will enjoy networking with colleagues from other schools and school systems and share and receive best practices. Online training for team members is provided and the two-day training for Lead Evaluators will be held in February concurrently with the state-wide conference in Williamsburg. Sign up to serve today by contacting the AdvancED Virginia office.
Demographics Update
Having up-to-date personnel and other demographic information on our schools and school systems is critical to the work of AdvancED Virginia.  If there is a new head of school or a new superintendent in your division, please contact the AdvancED Virginia office or update the information in the AdvancED Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tools (ASSIST™) by visiting the AdvancED website and logging into ASSIST.
