Congratulations to Carolyn F. Bernard in being named AdvancED Virginia’s Excellence in Education Award honoree for her unparalleled leadership in promoting and advancing excellence in education. A 41-year veteran educator with Chesapeake City Schools, Mrs. Bernard is principal at Grassfield High School.

Throughout her years as an administrator, Mrs. Bernard has been involved with AdvancED Virginia and SACS CASI accreditation at both school and system levels. She is a trained AdvancED Lead Evaluator and was a strong supporter and contributor in Chesapeake City Schools’ achieving AdvancED Systems Accreditation in 2012.

A committed promoter of education, she represented her region on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) and was elected President of the state organization for 2011-2012. Her work with VASSP expanded her opportunities to meet with legislators, serve on local and state committees and provide valuable input at national meetings. Additional examples of her contributions to the larger community include serving as a member of the State Superintendent’s Investigative Panel and the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) Strategic Planning Committee. Colleagues from around the state appreciate Mrs. Bernard’s efforts to champion education and garner her insights on a regular basis. “Her influence extends beyond our city boundaries,” commented Virginia Senator Harry B. Blevins. “As a member of the Virginia Senate Education Committee, I value Carolyn’s opinion on educational topics. Her practical and common-sense approach is refreshing and I routinely consult with her on educational legislative matters.”  Read more about Carolyn's accomplishments from the News section of our AdvancED Virginia web page.

Two Million Surveys Completed through ASSIST™
More than two million students, parents and teachers have completed AdvancED surveys about the quality of their educational institutions. This represents a total of 68 million ratings and open-ended responses that AdvancED has collected to questions about the experience stakeholders have had with their school or school system.

The surveys are available to AdvancED accredited institutions for free through AdvancED’s web-based school improvement system--ASSIST. Required as part of AdvancED accreditation beginning in January 2013, the surveys were offered as an optional component between March 2012 and December 2012. Surveys have been administered across the United States and around the world by public and private schools and school systems. The surveys are offered both online and in paper version and in multiple languages. Additionally, the survey content is customized for students, parents and staff at all grade levels. Analysis of their data by each institution will yield a rich source of information and insights into the opportunities institutions have to improve and deliver high quality education that meets the needs and expectations of their constituents. If you haven’t’ done so, please log in to ASSIST today to learn more and begin using the surveys.
