Students Teacher
This is an exciting time for AdvancED schools in Iowa and across the entire AdvancED network.  At the beginning of this year, we launched our New Standards and Protocols for accreditation.  At the same time, schools have been provided a new technology platform, ASSIST (AdvancED Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tools), to manage improvement efforts.  If you have not worked with ASSIST yet, please login to your school record and explore the resources.  ASSIST provides schools with ongoing improvement tools that include stakeholder surveys and a goal and plan builder along with several diagnostic tools.  If you need assistance accessing ASSIST for your school or school system, please contact our office at 888.413.3669, ext. 5754.

As we make this transition, we also are making a paradigm shift to the use of these tools for ongoing school improvement efforts.  Rather than accessing the information to prepare for your accreditation review, these tools are designed to promote ongoing improvement efforts in your school or school system and will support your preparation for your External Review.

As you look to these new processes, I also encourage you to consider becoming more involved in the AdvancED Accreditation Process.  In this newsletter, you will find information about upcoming workshops for Lead Evaluators and opportunities to serve on an External Review Team.  Serving on or leading a team is one of the best professional learning experiences available to you.  Please contact our office for additional information.

Sincerely,

Angie Koppang,
AdvancED Midwest Regional Director

Lead Evaluator Training Scheduled

Are you interested in serving as a Lead Evaluator or Team Member for External Reviews using our new protocol and tools?  We will be hosting this training in Ankeny on January 28-29 for Lead Evaluators.  This two-day training is designed for experienced school improvement leaders who would like to earn certification as a Lead Evaluator for External Reviews or for those who are interested in serving as External Review Team members.

The training consists of four modules designed to prepare you to serve as a Lead Evaluator. The training will focus on learning about the responsibilities of the Lead Evaluator and team members; understanding what to do before, during and after the review, managing and directing the work of the review team and developing the skills and expertise to lead the review effectively.

Upon completion of the four modules you would be eligible to serve as a Lead Evaluator for an external review within the AdvancED region.  If you are unable to attend the January training, there will be several other opportunities for training in the region.  If you are interested participating in the training or have additional questions, please contact Angie Koppang at akoppang@advanc-ed.org for additional information.

Team Members Needed

Serving on an AdvancED External Review Team is a professional learning opportunity you don’t want to miss.  You have the opportunity to enhance your own knowledge of the AdvancED Standards and Protocols through applying this knowledge to the school review and interacting with a group of professional education colleagues.  We have some openings for team members on spring External Reviews.  Please contact Jennifer Tschetter at jtschetter@advanc-ed.org if you are available to serve on one of the teams listed below:

  • Meskwaki Settlement School (April 3-4)
  • Clarinda Academy (April 9-10)
  • Woodward Academy (May 1-2
