Michigan Department of Education Fall Conference

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce that Dr. Steve Perry, principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School, author, and Education Contributor for CNN and MSNBC, will be our keynote speaker for the Fall School Improvement Conference on November 20, 2017 at the Lansing Center. Dr. Steve Perry’s heart pumps passion and produces positive change. Featured in CNN’s Black in America series, Dr. Perry is the most talked about innovative educator on the scene today.

Valuable and hands-on breakout sessions will be offered by schools, systems, Independent School Districts, MDE and AdvancED Michigan. Focus groups will be available to provide input for the reinventing of school improvement in Michigan.

On November 21, 2017, Dr. John Almarode, from James Madison University Center for STEM Education Outreach, will present “Teaching Children in Poverty: What Works Best in Teaching and Learning.” Dr. Almarode continues the focus on how to engage students living in poverty that Dr. Eric Jensen shared last fall. Dr. John Almarode has worked with schools, classrooms and teachers all over the world. John began his career in Augusta County, Virginia teaching mathematics and science to a wide-range of students. Since then, he has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on the application of the science of learning to the classroom, school, and home environments. He has worked with hundreds of school districts and thousands of teachers in countries as far away as Australia, Canada, England, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, South Korea, and Thailand.

Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) presentations will be made available to conference attendees during the second day of the conference. Visit the Michigan Association of School Administrators website for registration and further information.
