Summer 2012

Dear AdvancED International Schools,

Greetings and congratulations on another successful school year! I hope that you are enjoying the summer break. With so many exciting events at AdvancED, it is with delight that we share with you the following information. At the forefront of the excitement, it is a sincere pleasure to introduce Dr. Ray Lindley and Dr. Dennis Klumpp to the International Services team.

Dr. Lindley joins AdvancED as the Regional Director of Europe/Asia for International Services. Dr. Lindley comes to AdvancED from the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) where he served as the Director of International and Transregional Accreditation managing accreditation services for Distance Education Schools, International Schools, Post-Secondary Non-Degree Granting Schools, Residential Schools, and Travel Study Schools. Prior to NWAC, he worked with the Oregon Department of Education.

Dr. Klumpp joins AdvancED as the Regional Director for Latin America.  He has vast educational leadership experience in Latin America, having served as a school head in five accredited American International schools in the region. Dr. Klumpp also has been involved heavily in AdvancED accreditation through service as the Chair of the International Council as well as leading and serving on many AdvancED External Review teams.

Dr. Klumpp takes over for Steve Sibley who returned to Venezuela at CIC-Valencia to serve on the leadership team and then transition into the Superintendent’s position in August 2013.  We will miss Steve and thank him for his leadership and commitment to the school improvement and accreditation process; we all wish him continued success and happiness.  We are very pleased that Steve, in his new role, will continue serving the Latin American community on school improvement and accreditation matters.

Please welcome Dr. Lindley and Dr. Klumpp to the team as we continue to support you in your school improvement and accreditation needs.

Sincerely,

Rob Leveillee
Vice President, International Services

Early Learning: How It May Affect Your School
The information below provides a framework for how AdvancED will implement Early Learning accreditation and how it may affect your school.

Schools with Pre-School Grades
For elementary schools that have pre-school grades, the school’s self-assessment diagnostic (internal review) will include Early Learning Standard 4 in addition to the five school-level accreditation standards.  The External Review Team will also address Early Learning Standard 4 in addition to the five school-level standards. Early Learning Standard 4 heavily focuses on staff qualifications and health/safety, and is essential in Early Learning.

ASSIST will provide an option for the self assessment diagnostic. Schools having grades below Kindergarten should select the option “Self-Assessment with Early Learning.”

We recognize that schools with External Reviews scheduled for the Fall 2012 may already be completing their self-assessments.  Therefore, for schools having grades below Kindergarten, the “Self-Assessment with Early Learning” is optional if the External Review is scheduled for Fall 2012.  The option is a requirement beginning in January 2013.

We have tools and resources available to support Early Learning Accreditation online.  Please visit the Accreditation Resources and Tools for Early Learning Schools web page.  Your principal, head of school, or superintendent can assist you with locating this resource or feel free to contact the AdvancED International Services team for information. This web page is intended for early learning schools and provides the standards, workbooks, and additional tools to support the early learning protocol.
2012-2013 Annual Accreditation Fee
Your 2012-2013 accreditation fees are due July 31, 2012. As you may know, we send the invoices in the spring of each year for the upcoming year's fees. This timing gives you flexibility with regard to the budget year of payment and assists with planning expenses for the coming year.

Accreditation fees enable the Office of International Services to provide you with local support for accreditation as well as international leadership and representation through AdvancED. Specifically, your fees help pay the costs associated with on-site external review visits, customized technical assistance, web-based reporting, professional development, publications, and tools that support you in your efforts to continuously improve.  If you have already submitted payment- thank you! If not, please promptly pay your accreditation fee so that you can maintain your current accreditation status.
