President's Letter

Harrison_Laurie-EVMS 1
Hello and Happy New Year!

I hope you're as excited as I am for 2018! There are so many things to look forward to personally and professionally this year and I hope that whatever your goals are that you'll persevere and accomplish all of them!

First, I'd like to take a moment and thank our Past President, Devan MacConnell Maloney, and our 2017 board for their commitment to our chapter and to the fundraising profession. One highlight of 2017 was our National Philanthropy Day where over 600 fundraisers, philanthropists and community leaders celebrated philanthropy in Hampton Roads. I also want to thank Kay Stine who rolled off our board after many years of service. Thank you all for your commitment to making our chapter so successful!

Our board has already been working hard to make this year one of the best yet. I hope you will take advantage of all the wonderful networking and educational opportunities we have planned. One of the things that you should have already noticed is that we have a new newsletter and our website won't be far behind!

Don't miss our social on January 11 and our first meeting on January 16th. Danny Rubin was one of the favorite presenters last year and you won't want to miss it! We will also have our 5 minute Ethics Check-up and an update about the new tax bill. Don't forget to take advantage of the opportunity to network from 11:30-12 prior to the start of our monthly programs.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President. If you have any questions or suggestions for our chapter please feel free to contact me at harrisld@evms.edu. I look forward to a great year of professional development, to meeting new friends and to celebrating philanthropy with you!

Cheers,

Laurie Harrison

Tax Changes for 2018

As you know, there is still a buzz about the recently approved tax reform bill which is expected to affect charitable giving. As a professional fundraiser, we need to be well versed in upcoming changes. Based on several articles that have been published, the changes will require us to focus our efforts on donor relationships and retention.

This year, AFP HR chapter will help provide tips along the way – look for updates in the newsletter and practical suggestions at our monthly luncheons.

Contact Serena Amerson, CFRE, Government Relations Chair with questions at 757.961.2015 or amersosa@evms.edu.
