 A Note From Cvent

As we come to late summer in New England, we see things like umbrellas at outdoor cafés, folks having picnics on the beaches, and the Red Sox playing at Fenway. All that reminds me how lucky I am to live in this beautiful part of the world. I also feel lucky to be part of this industry and this MPI chapter. We have seen turmoil over the last year and a half, and continue to maneuver through it as things evolve with COVID-19 and regional restrictions. Yet, as we look for the silver lining, resilience, kindness, and strength are all around. For MPI New England in particular, we have a group of volunteers who have been selfless in their gifts of time and talent, and without whom our chapter wouldn’t be what it is.

Chapter events like July’s Education program at Park Plaza and this month’s Networking Night at Dillon’s were planned and executed by committee volunteers. As President-elect, I'm lucky enough to see the efforts of the various committees along the planning process. I’m most impressed by each person’s continued focus on the member experience- keeping the member in mind at all times.

If you’re interested in getting involved with your chapter, the Fall Membership Event at Granary Tavern on September 22 is a can’t-miss opportunity. The goal of that meeting is twofold; educate current members about the various committees and volunteer opportunities small and large, as well as show gratitude to our current volunteers for their dedication- current volunteers attend for free!

MISSED THE MEETING

july event photoLinda Rindos from the Boston Park Plaza with Katie Butler, MPINE's VP of Education

On July 27, MPI New England chapter members and special guests were treated to our second in-person meeting of 2021 with outstanding food, beverage and the debut of the hottest new function space in Boston: The Square at The Boston Park Plaza.

After a warm welcome from Chapter President, Kate Page and Linda Pond Rindos, Director of Group Sales at Boston Park Plaza, the program kicked off. Beth Nelson and Hope Holm from Encore provided the audio-visual, and educational content from an Industry White Paper written by Janet Sperstad, CMP Madison College and Amanda Cecil, PhD, CMP, titled: Purposeful Meeting: How to Plan with Deeper Innovation and Insight in Mind.

With the goals of driving value and creating a more meaningful, authentic experience this thought-provoking presentation focused on planning an event with 5 key elements: health and well being, more
thought behind event design, social responsibility, creative use of technology, and behavioral science. As Carina Bauer, CEO, IMEX Group sees it: “Purposeful meetings inspire people to do extraordinary things, allow individuals to be brilliant and inspire others, and maybe most importantly, deepen personal connections that broaden perspectives and spark innovation. Purposeful meetings are a catalyst – one that truly ignites fresh thinking and new behavior. They help our partners, attendees and exhibitors to understand more, and achieve more.”

 DID YOU KNOW?
The City Councils of both Boston and Cambridge recently voted to create a Boston-Cambridge Tourism Destination Marketing District (BCTDMD). This will allow hotels in Boston and Cambridge to assess guests a 1.5% fee that will be reinvested back into the area's tourism and hospitality sector. The assessments will go into effect in October, and are designed to help support post-pandemic economic recovery.

UPDATED CDC GUIDELINES
While the outlook has been improving in recent months for in-person gatherings, our industry is still not out of the woods. Evidence supports the fact that only a small percentage of vaccinated people will become infected when exposed to the Delta variant; however, those people can spread the virus to others. Some tourist destinations have recently reinstated mask requirements regardless of vaccination status.

Based on the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), meeting organizers and venue managers who are assessing safety measures will likely need to consider transmission levels not only in their host destination but also in the areas from which their attendees are traveling. Click below for a recent article from Northstar Meetings Group.
