Bilateral Chamber's 14th Annual Model Arab League (MAL)
Since 2007, the Bilateral Chamber and National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations have hosted a leadership development program for university students from across the United States. Participants take on roles of delegates in a simulated debate of the Arab League whereby witnessing first-hand the complexities of international policy formation.
|
This year, students from seven universities competed in our first-ever virtual model. The formal debates and moderated caucus took place across a series of five specialized councils: Joint Defense Council, Council of Political Affairs, Council of Arab Social Affairs Ministers, Council of Arab Environmental Affairs, and the Special Council on Technology and Cybersecurity. Each council had a range of topics designed to provide students the opportunity and ability to form policy resolutions. The topics ranged from "formulating solutions to improve epidemic resilience throughout the Arab League" to "evaluating existing water rights and improving agreements between states" and "discussing the role of the digital economy and emerging technologies.”
"It is not everyday you come in contact with something like this. We are given the chance to represent people like us and make a change for our people and other countries. In a sense, we're the heroes of our own story. By the end, I could see other delegates with never before seen confidence, pride, and a love for bettering their people. It's not like anything else I have experienced, and it's better than what I would have hoped for."
