A Most Remarkable Woman: Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe DSG
Our Guest of Honour is a politician, Privy Councillor, former UK Government Minister and Member of Parliament; and since leaving politics has become something of a “celebrity” – though she would probably not describe herself as one – by appearing variously on BBC TV’s popular show Strictly Come Dancing, in pantomime, in the theatre and on film. Not only that, she is a popular novelist too. She will talk about her life in and out of politics, as well as share with us her views on the current state of British politics. Meet her on Wednesday 23rd September in Geneva, or on Thursday 24th September in Zurich.

BRITISH-SWISS FACTS

DID YOU KNOW that the Brits were the mountaineering pioneers in the Alps?
From the year 1855 all first ascents in the Alps were mastered by British citizens; and by 1865 climbing the Matterhorn was the last remaining challenge.
In July that year, a battle began between the Italian mountain guide Carrel and Brit Edward Whymper.  Whymper, who only gathered his group of seven within a few days, was at first behind the Italian ascenders but an early start secured him victory.
Sadly, his success was overshadowed by the tragedy occurring during the descent. The inexperienced Hadow fell and with him swept three more to their death. Whymper and the two Swiss mountain guides, father and son Taugwalder, only survived thanks to the fact that the rope was ripped apart.
