"Sechseläuten" on 15th April in Zurich -
Some background on the Swiss tradition
This Zurich spring custom, "Sechseläuten", got its unusual name from the 14th century tradition of ringing a Grossmünster bell at 6 pm to proclaim the start of the summer. Since the 20th century, every third Monday in April, the members of all the 25 guilds proceed through the city. At 6 pm, the "Böögg", or snowman, symbol of the wintertime, awaits his fiery and explosive end. Groups representing some of the guilds, gallop around him until the Böögg explodes. The quicker his symbolic end occurs, the sooner the long awaited spring comes. Between the 14th and 18th century, the guilds were instrumental in shaping the professional and social life of the city of Zurich. At the exhibition Zunftstadt Zürich visitors can witness the story of "Sechseläuten".

New Book: SWISS MADE by James Breiding
A new book, Swiss Made by Zurich-based James Breiding, takes a lively analytical look at why Switzerland, a tiny land-locked country with few natural advantages, has been so successful for so long at so many things. Detailed chapters on key sectors – from food and watchmaking, through finance and pharmaceuticals, all the way to engineering – include profiles of leading Swiss companies. Done with great style and illustrated throughout, there has been no book like this before. As Larry Summers has described it, ‘This important book makes a very strong case for the Swiss model.’ In Paul Volker’s view, ‘This book has lessons for all.’ Published by Profile Books, it is available from good bookshops and online retailers such as Amazon.
