AFP-HR Vision Statement

To be recognized as the premier fundraising resource for professionals to learn, collaborate and grow together for a vibrant Hampton Roads community.

President's Letter
Harrison_Laurie-EVMS 1

Hello and Thank you! Last month I had the opportunity to represent our AFP-HR Chapter at the 2018 AFP International Fundraising Conference in New Orleans. What a wonderful experience it was to connect with other AFP chapters, interact with AFP International staff and learn from top fundraising professionals. One of the main topics of this year’s conference was AFP’s new I.D.E.A. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) Impact Program. It’s first campaign under the program is the Women’s Impact Initiative - a two-year program that will assess, address and highlight the specific issues and challenges that women in the fundraising profession face—with the ultimate goal of creating resources that help overcome gender inequity issues in the fundraising profession. Recently, The Association of Fundraising Professionals & The Chronicle of Philanthropy conducted a survey on sexual harassment in the Fundraising Profession. The survey found that one in 4 women have experienced sexual harassment in the fundraising field and 7% of men have experienced the same. For more information about the sexual harassment survey and the Women’s Impact Initiative please visit afpidea.org/wii.

Please join us on May 15 for our program on how understanding volunteer recruitment and retention can bolster your fundraising program. And, don’t forget to sign up to get your new professional headshot taken at the same time! Don’t miss the opportunity to nominate a deserving leader in philanthropy to receive an award at our National Philanthropy Day celebration on November 28th. The deadline for nominations is June 15th at 5pm.

Thank you for being a member of AFP-HR and for what you do to change the world through philanthropy!

Government Relations Update
2018 Tax Logo
As the 2018 Virginia General Assembly Regular Session has come to an end, this may be a good time to consider visiting elected officials to share information about the work of your non-profit organization. You may wish to start with your city officials. Engage your leadership to learn about those that have close ties with elected officials and delineate a strategy to leverage those relationships. This is a great way to partner with board members and/or donors to increase visibility and awareness of the great work your organization is doing and to help in their understanding of why funding is essential. When visiting, be prepared! Do your homework so you have a better sense for what their position may be as it relates to the work of your organization. In addition, create a packet of information with key points and a call to action. Contact Serena Amerson, CFRE, Government Relations Chair with questions – 757.961.2015 or amersosa@evms.edu.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (I.D.E.A.)
2017 diversity logo

Last month our speaker,  Synetheia Newby,  shared great information on Diversity and Inclusion. Please see the video “Inclusion Starts With I” discussing the importance of a positive, inclusive work environment. This video shows that bias can appear in both expected and unexpected ways and that each of us has the power to make a difference.

"Thought Ms. Newby was the best Diversity speaker in years!" - program attendee.
