CEI is committed to having all voices in Colorado education represented at Showcase and has a limited number of registration scholarships available to help make this a reality. If you are a member of a diverse population and/or work in a small or rural district, you are strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, CEI has found participants gain more from Showcase when they attend with others from their district, so please encourage your colleagues to register.

Restoration Project Provides Lessons in Engineering, Renovation and Life Skills
Colorado STEM Champion McKinstry recently partnered with students from the engineering program at John F. Kennedy High School to design and implement some high-performance modifications to a 51-year-old greenhouse on the school's roof.

At the ribbon cutting held on May 16, students and engineers shared their experiences about the transformation that took six months to complete.

Colorado School Districts Awarded $1.5 Million for Social and Emotional Wellness Programs
CEI is partnering with Kaiser Permanente to advance a culture of health and wellness at 13 schools in five Colorado school districts.

Five Colorado school districts will receive a combined $1.5 million in Thriving Schools behavioral health grants. The grants are designed to increase access to mental health and wellness programs. As a part of the three-year grant, which will be awarded in August 2017, CEI will provide technical assistance, including advising, thought partnership, training, coaching, and facilitation.

2017 APSI: Where Teachers Become Learners
July 10-13, 2017 | Denver, Colorado

More than 400 educators from Colorado and beyond will participate in four days of focused learning at the 2017 AP Summer Institute.

This convening will deliver effective instructional strategies to reach diverse student populations from a variety of backgrounds, many of whom may not be as academically prepared as the traditional AP student.

Opportunities and Resources
Funding for Expanded Computer Science Education

The Colorado Education Initiative is committed to expanding the number and diversity of students succeeding in rigorous computer science courses in Colorado. With generous funding from the Gill Foundation, organizations including CEI, the Colorado School of Mines, and Code.org will partner to provide 80 educators with two years of AP Computer Science Principles training, instructional coaching, and academic supports for students. 2018 Colorado Teacher of the Year Application Available

Each year, the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled teacher in any state-approved or accredited school (kindergarten through grade 12) who is planning to continue in an active teaching status. The award recipient will automatically become Colorado's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition. Applications are due Thursday, June 1.

Is Your School in the Running?

The National Foundation for Governor’s Fitness Councils wants to reward your elementary or middle school for showing leadership in getting and keeping your students fit. Nominate your school to be in the running to receive a $100,000 Don’t Quit! state-of-the-art fitness center. If your school serves students between the ages of 8-13 years old and has a 900-1,500 square foot space ready for brand new fitness equipment, apply today! Applications are due by June 2.

Great Outdoors Colorado School Yard Initiative Application Window Open

Change your students’ school experience with a GOCO School Yard Initiative (SYI) grant. SYI grants help schools, which apply in partnership with their local governments, to construct outdoor spaces where kids enjoy unstructured play and outdoor learning. Visit GOCO.org/schools to watch the SYI webinar, read the how-to apply guide, and submit your application. The deadline is January 9, 2018.
