Tribute to Dr. Alexander Haig Simonian
04.10.1955 – 03.02.2022
On behalf of the British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce, it is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Dr. Alexander Haig Simonian.
A loving husband and father, a journalist, a writer, a broadcaster and best known to us as simply Haig, a friend and former Councillor and BSCC President.
Haig was an Oxford graduate in Philosophy, Politics and Economics as well as having a doctorate in French and German politics. He started his journalistic career at the 'Economist' back in 1984. And thereafter he was chief German correspondent for the 'Financial Times' in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon his relocation to Switzerland, he wrote monthly columns for 'NZZ am Sonntag'. Having extensive experience in broadcasting, he regularly appeared on Swiss German, French and Italian radio and television.
We bid farewell to an intelligent and talented man who will be remembered for his contributions to journalism, his commitment to the Chamber and its members and for his positive attitude to life. His sense of humour and unique way of thinking ensured that there was much joy to be had and never a dull day to be found.
We thank you, Haig, for the knowledge you shared with us, for all the laughter you brought to us and for all the moments we were lucky to spend with you.
Our thoughts are with Haig's family at this difficult time.

Have your employees returned to the office? Chances are, you’re still seeing plenty of empty desks.
Workforces the world over have faced an extended period of intense challenges, instant changes and constant uncertainty. Offices that were once heaving with people, noise and creativity were silenced over night as global lockdowns began to take place. Teams were forced to attempt to replicate constructive and meaningful conversations via multiple screens, interrupted by children, family members, flatmates, pets, postmen, internet failures and of course, the dreaded “you’re on mute” conversation.
Do employees want to return? Make way for the Reluctant Returner.
While the level of concern varies across locations, our research shows that reluctance is rife throughout Europe: the majority – 64% – of workers are worried about a return to the workplace. The sheer scale of reluctance is evidenced by the fact that this percentage does not drop below 50% for any country – meaning one in two colleagues across any market is in fact reluctant to return to the office.
So just how can employers create workplaces that have a clear and unique purpose, encouraging colleagues to once again collaborate, socialise and innovate face-to-face? Find out what we learned from 3,000 office workers and 2,750 employers.
