Beyond Just Fundraising: The Impact of AFP In Philanthropy, The Workplace and The World
Mike Geiger, President and CEO, AFP

Tuesday, March 20, 2018
11:30AM TO 1:00PM

AFP was created to serve the fundraising profession, and it remains dedicated to providing the best fundraising education, training, research and networking in the world. But as the largest community of fundraisers across the globe, AFP must stand for more than just training. We must serve as a champion for members in their workplaces—addressing issues like harassment, gender equity and creating a culture of philanthropy—and as an advocate for the profession in Congress and in the public, spotlighting the impact fundraising creates on communities everywhere.
Mike Geiger, MBA, CPA, the president and CEO of AFP, will talk about the future of AFP and its growing role in all aspects of society, and his vision for the association. Fundraising trends, the new tax laws, and new AFP initiatives will all be discussed, with time for Q&A!

Mentoring Partnership Program
Mentoring Program

Everyone, regardless of years of experience in the field, can benefit from the sage advice of a mentor at some point, or several points, in their careers.

The AFP Hampton Roads Mentor Partnership Program is designed to support and nurture fundraising professionals in the Hampton Roads area by pairing advanced development professionals with those members who are new to the field of fundraising, contemplating a career change, or seeking expert guidance in order to provide one-on-one assistance that will enhance your knowledge and skills as development professionals.

These mentor partnerships will:
• Offer the opportunity to work one-on-one with seasoned professionals in the field
• Create a positive relationship with a colleague who will serve as a one-on-one mentor and professional counselor
• Provide a trusting, open and honest environment that respects confidentiality
• Foster a culture of congeniality and good will within the Hampton Roads fundraising community

The partnership will be for an initial six-month period, with the option to renew the partnership on the agreement of both parties. The deadline to apply is March 30.

2018 Tax Update
 2018 Tax Logo

A reminder that there are many discussions going on related to recent tax changes as accountants and donors are working to complete last year’s taxes while evaluating what should be done in the current calendar year. It’s a good time to give thought to your donors and how they give and determine how you can engage in conversations about philanthropy. Do you know who your appreciated stock donors are? Will they give again this year with stock? Give thought to getting in touch with donors during tax season to better understand their intentions the remainder of the year – i.e. start your giving conversations earlier. Contact Serena Amerson, CFRE, Government Relations Chair with questions – 757.961.2015 or  amersosa@evms.edu.
