Member-Get-A-Member Campaign

Member-Get-A-MemberDid you know that the National Capital Chapter  was chartered in 1957 and is one of the oldest ASIS Chapters?  Additionally, with over 1,500 members, we are also the largest of ASIS International's 241 worldwide chapters.  This year our membership has grown approximately 18% and we want to be sure to keep that phenomenal growth going.  You can help us make that happen through the Member-Get-A-Member Campaign.

Recruiting a member is easy—when you connect with fellow security professionals at meetings, online, on the job, or while networking at industry events. Simply tell your colleague(s) how you benefit from your membership in ASIS and suggest that they visit the ASIS International website to learn more about the value of membership.

Every time you recruit a new member, you help strengthen ASIS. A vital and growing membership means greater recognition of the security profession, improved educational and networking opportunities for members, and the advancement of our profession worldwide. And, referring members has added benefits for you and the ASIS NCC!

Recap:  NCC October Chapter Meeting

The topic of our October meeting, held at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C., was "Workplace Violence: Prevention and Proactive Measures".  Sensational events of violence are seen more and more often with no cure in sight.  Speakers Michael Runyan, CPP, Securitas and Mary E. Pivec, Esq. of Williams Mullen LLC discussed the basics of workplace violence.  Additionally, the presentation reviewed some of the challenges faced by those charged with mitigating or reducing risk when establishing programs to reduce the risk of a violent event and its resulting losses.  Ms. Pivec provided an overview of the OSHA General Duty Clause and responsiblity of employers to safety and security.

Long-time NCC Member Awarded Lifetime Membership

Steve Gottrich, CPPASIS International has awarded long-time chapter member Stephen Gottrich, Jr, CPP, with its Lifetime Member Award.  Steve was present at our October meeting and received the certificate commemorating the milestone from Leon Beresford, CPP, National Capital Chapter Chairman.  Steve served as Chapter Secretary for more than seven years until his retirement in 2008.  Since “retiring” as the Chapter’s longest serving officer, Steve has continued to serve the chapter as a member of our Security Education Foundation and continues to attend most chapter meetings.

Steve began his security career as a U.S. Air Force officer, retiring after some 20 plus years of service with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) as a Lt. Colonel.   Most recently, he was employed by MVM Security, McLean, VA and served as their FSO.

Member Spotlight:  Marty Mitzel

Marty MitzelMarty Mitzel has been an account manager at multiple sites for Securitas Security Services since November 2002 and a member of ASIS since 2004.  Prior to coming to the security industry, Marty served in the US Marine Corps for 20 years.  He has served on the Private Security Appreciation Day committee since 2009 and acted as Chairperson in 2012 and 2013 – and he takes this job seriously!  Devoting countless hours to organizing the event, finding sponsors and selecting the award winners takes a great deal of devotion, and Marty is certainly devoted.  Each year he eagerly fulfills this role, and considers it an honor. We recently asked Marty some questions so that you may all get to know him a bit better too…

What is a “typical day” like?

Marty’s typical day consists of interaction with customers, ensuring all security screening equipment and access control systems are operating properly, and monitoring performance of security officers.  As issues and incidents on-site arise, he communicates timely and effectively with the customer ensuring policy and procedures are executed properly to ensure customer satisfaction.

Describe some of your routine tasks.

As a hands-on manager, Marty checks multiple buildings and meets with officers working their post.  He conducts personnel inspections, armed equipment inspections, and security equipment inspections and ensures procedures implemented for protection of property and client employees are understood and executed properly.

How did you get into security management?  What do you like most about it?

After serving twenty-years (active duty) and then retiring after 9/11, Marty was approached about joining a private security company.  He applied and interviewed as the on-site training manager for Gannett/USA Today headquarters located in McLean, VA.   After six months, Marty was promoted to account manager position in charge of over 40 security officers at two different facilities.  In addition, the contract was unique because all contract security staff participated in a quality of performance review each quarter.

He most likes the direct contact with company employees that allows him the opportunity to bring a consistent and reliable level of service by having involved, focused, committed and trained security team.  Marty believes there should always be a sense of urgency in what he does… this does not mean rushing through safety or security procedures or that security has precedence over other functions, but rather, what he believes that his role contributes to the greater good of the overall security mission.  It is critical at the end that he take pride in himself and the work he produces… and he believes that everyone’s role on the team is important!

Would you recommend security management as a career to others?

Marty feels that it is important that front line supervisors and newly appointed account managers display the ability to create a partnership between the private security company and their client.   He advocates that people should embrace the opportunity and support leading others into the role as future managers.  Since 2004, Marty has helped several front line, uniformed supervisors transition successfully from an officer’s role into being a positive and effective account manager.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
